Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
May 12th: Carlisle
5f Maiden
  • Made a good price at the Tattersalls part 1 sales. His sire's yearlings sold very well in 2004 after a notably good season, including with his 2yos.
  • Reviewed at the sales and rated 65 but with a good chance of being a 2yo winner at his level. Smallish and just above average build, fairly sire typical but not as well built as the better types and lacked some quality - 'workmanlike'.
  • Good sire tends to get 2yos that are physically very similar although often slightly small, compact, heavy & strong build and not particularly taking.
  • Sire had a remarkably good 2004 both for number of winners and quality and possibly reflecting the better mares he got after his good start at stud. He has a good record in getting 5f winners although better from May onwards.
  • Dam is by a moderate sire and probably just rates as an ok pedigree overall. She showed moderate form and has produced one moderate runner.
  • Trainer has an average record with 2yos and has had an increased number in the last two seasons following poor seasons after a move north to his present base. He does not target strong debuts and most tend to rate in the range 35-60 with later winners spread across that range. He gets occasional debut wins which tend to be earlier in the season when he runs his more natural 2yos and in weakish races.
  • In summary ought to be a competitive 2yo and capable of just rating over 70. Being the first runner for the stable is a good sign but unlikely to be ready enough in this reasonably strong race.  Profile [58]
  • May 19th: Newcastle
    5f Novice
  • 12/1 on debut at Carlisle and the trainer's first 2yo runner. Well drawn in 13 of 13 and ran the rail for the first 3F+ of the race. Settled midfield in second rank on the rail. Travelled quite well and 2L off the pace maker at halfway. Switched left off the rail coming to the last furlong and made good progress 5 wide to close on the leading two in the last half furlong to finish 3rd.
  • Overall the race saw the weaker front runners fade and the winner who was front rank won slightly comfortably and doing enough to hold the second. Other runners as well as this one made progress to some extent from behind including other newcomers who ran wide on the track.  Estimate [61]
  • The trainer has had a FTO winner with his second 2yo runner since this one ran showing similar form. Some of his early debut runners in 2004 (March to April) were well below final rating on debut and this has perhaps influenced the later start in 2005. Both his runners have looked 'ready' in 2005. Likely to show around 8-10lb improvement. Receives 7lb from the topweight winner.  Profile [70 + 7 = 77]
