DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
May 16th: Windsor
5f Maiden Fillies'
  • Retained for lowish to middling price at the the Tattersalls part 2 sales. Not bad considering it took the auctioneer more than a minute to extract a minimum opening bid of 800 guineas.
  • Reviewed at the sales and rated 52. Tiny but with a good build for her small size. Compact and deep in front and an ok mover but always likely to be limited by her size.
  • First season sire made 6f May debut at 2yo and superior 6-7f runner. Made solid impression at the sales and yearlings sold well. B2yoR rated 32 of his yearlings and they were a solid group if lacking real stars.
  • Sire has had 14 runners already with three winners, two on debut. 5 other runners have placed on debut at moderate levels. One of his winners won a new Listed race at York last week.
  • Good, reliable trainer targets a maiden win with 2yos in the first three runs. The better types will then run in conditions+ races and a few in nurseries.
  • He does not target strong debut runs and the FTO wins tend to come along with the best 2yos. Consider in 2003 that 7 of his first 10 2yos runners won on debut. This wasn't a 'plan' as such but a year when he had a lot of good 2yos. Six of those 7 have rated over 90 in their careers.
  • The debut wins tend to come in the period May to June and are often in the North or Midlands. This is related to the fact that his earliest debuts each season are a mix of his best and most precocious 2yos, sprinkled with a few duff ones (often owner breds). The best ones win on debut in this period
  • He has had one 2yo run so far who overcame inexperience to win on debut and looks one of his better types. He has run a moderate owner bred in the race in 2003.
  • In summary the key to placing the debut level performance is to assess whether this is a better type or a lesser one. A good runner would be competitive to win on debut. She looked tiny at the sales and unlikely to be a better type. Profile [51]
  • June 2nd: Sandown
    5f Auction
  • Paddock reviewed at Windsor and had changed a great deal. She looks slightly odd in that the front and back halves appear to come from different horses. However, she has grown well and become notably mature and muscular in front. Lighter and less powerful behind. She was fitter than any 2yo reviewed to date.
  • Difficult to rate her overall but she ought to be better than the 52 sales rating and a mid 60s level would be plausible with the fitness advantage.
  • 20/1 and broke slowly in a race with a solid pace where the first 5 home were in place and clear after 1F. Made a short effort into midfield before fading. Estimate [35]
  • But for the paddock review at Windsor she would be easy to dismiss. The form of her debut is poor and the filly that finished just behind her has been beaten in a seller since. THe way she has developed and how fit she was just raises a hint that she might be capable of 60s rating.  Profile [57 + 7 = 64]
