Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
March 31st : Declared
5f Conditions - Brocklesby
at Doncaster
  • Made above average price at DSL sales.
  • By second season sire that made a very good impression in 2004 with a good set of sprint 2yos, including early 5f winners. Has had one runner so far in 2005 that finished second.
  • Dam was moderate and slow over long distances.
  • Trainer is the son of BA McMahon who targeted 2yo racing and in the late 1990s to 2001 got his 2yo ready to win early and regularly won this race and the Auction on the same card. He won the race in 200 and 2001. Since 2002 he seemed to take a slightly easier approach on debut and runners were not as ready as before. He had the second in 2004. Many of these runners and winners were for owner J Fretwell who is a strong supporter of 2yo racing and owns this one.
  • So, with his father as his assistant what approach is the trainer going to take with debuts? Probably best to consider that owner J Fretwell likes to win or compete well in the race and usually has his best 2yo here. If you were a new trainer you would make sure it was competitive.
  • In summary a very interesting runner from the 'right' connections. The sire got early 5f winners from stout dams in 2004 and the sales price suggests a good physical type. Strong competitor for a place and for a win if he is really ready on debut.  Profile [74]
  • March 31st: Doncaster
    Post Race
  • A disappointment. Opened at 22/1 and went to 25/1 before persistent each-way support down to 10/1 joint 4th favourite. He was driven along to keep up in midfield on the stands' side before fading.
  • On profile he had the potential to be one of the better runners in the field and the each-way support is interesting. He was the first 2yo runner for his trainer. Mixed signals but the lack of zip and the fade were not good signs. The trainer's father had 65-75 rating horses finish unplaced in this race but better types used to show more ability on debut even if not winning. Ran in changed colours. Estimate [49]
  • May 24th: Ripon
    5f Maiden
  • Two month break from the Brocklesby. Finished with mostly moderate types and the form has not proved to be strong. Trainer's early runners all showed some inexperience and most lost ground at the start. The better ones still got into their races. His STO runs have not shown great improvement.
  • Difficult to place because presumably had shown some ability to be chosen for the Brocklesby and to receive each-way support. However, the trainer's record in 2005 doesn't suggest improvement to his best level.  Profile [63]
  • June 6th: Windsor
    6f Maiden
  • 22/1 at Ripon in a race run on rain softened ground where the field split into two groups. Ran on the stands' side which was always just ahead of the far side. Made an effort after halfway and some progress but hung right into the middle of the course. Kept on ok in the last furlong and looked an ok size and an athletic mover.  Estimate [64]
  •  A solid return after a long break at Ripon and steps up to 6f which looks ok. Poorly drawn in 3 but solid prospects for reasonable improvement.  Profile [70]
