DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 15th: Newbury
5.1f Maiden
  • Sold for slightly above average price at Doncaster St Leger sales.
  • Reviewed at the sales and rated 64 with an above average chance of being a competitive sprint 2yo. He was an acceptable size and heavily built. He was notably short with a longer neck. He was a good mover overall. He looked capable of being an average maiden winner helped by his maturity but not with strong scope to develop further unless he grew.
  • By second season sire who had 5 moderate to average winners in first season, only one at 5f although two early runners showed 60s form over 5f. He has had four runners so far in 2005 and similar hints that runners will be better for 6f than 5f.
  • Dam is a full sister to Group 1 sprinter (and useful 2yo) Pipalong. She was only a moderate sprint winner herself. Has produced an average sprint winner with her previous foal.
  • Good trainer that supports 2yo racing. His debut runners tend to be competent and the FTO wins come along with better runners who can win on better ability. However, he tends to choose his earliest debut runners well and most are competitive to place and win if they are useful+.
  • He has had two previous runners in 2005. One was 4th (first newcomer to finish) in a mixed quality Brocklesby and the other was an inexperienced 5th in a Newmarket maiden yesterday..
  • In summary the pedigree and sales review of a 75ish early sprint winner. Unlikely to be ready to run to that level on debut but on trainer's record in previous seasons he should be competent. However his previous two runners in 2005 have not been competitive and profile dropped slightly because of that.  Profile [63]

    Post Race
  • 6/1 3rd favourite. He was the trainer's third debut of the season and the previous two had never got into their races and been slightly disappointing. This one gave a more typical competitive early debut by the stable - so what were the differences? This race had only newcomers and the pace was moderate which put no strong pressure on any of the runners. The two previous debuts had run in races where those with previous runs had set a good pace and put other runners under strong pressure. The jockey looked better here restraining a free running type in a slow race and who had carried himself into the race. In the other two debuts he had to organise debut runners that were under pressure.
  • The other notable point was how mature Don't Tell Sue looked. At the sales he had looked short, well built and mature. He has developed into a notably heavy and strong type and looked very mentally and physically mature in front. He is is still on the short side but moves well.
  • He settled behind the pacemaking pair and ran quite freely and running into the back of other runners but accepted the restraint from the jockey by halfway. He did not make ground immediately as the pace quickened after 2 furlongs out but showed a good attitude and maturity to keep on in the last furlong to lead late. He probably lacks the quality to be useful+ but his relative maturity and strength will take him a long way in early season. He didn't produce a 'speed' 5f run here.  Profile [66]

    5f Conditions
  • Trainer chooses his runners in this race carefully. Gave an unusually competitive debut in a season where the trainer's FTO runners have needed their debut runs. Penalised 3lb for that win.  Profile [79]
