Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
May 1st: Newmarket
5f Maiden
  • Made good price at Tattersalls part 1 sales but not high by the standard of the sale.
  • Until this season the sire had moderate record with 5f winners and 2yos tended to need time to develop. So far he has had a 5f and 5.3f winners for M Channon although neither put up real 'speed' 5f performances. That trainer continues his 'Zafonic' campaign with this one.
  • The dam was a high class miler at 3yo after showing good form in one run over 6f at 2yo. The better runners she has produced have needed time to develop to 3yo and 10f.
  • Trainer has settled into his normal pattern of debut runners being competent and able to place on debut in suitable races without winning unless targeted debuts for specific owners. He has also had an 'accidental' debut win in a moderate race.
  • The trainer introduced the 2yo Group 2 winner Checkit in this race in 2002 (finished 2nd at 10/1). In general he has run moderate to average types on debut at the course in 2002-4. The occasional better type like Checkit and Turnkey (in 2004) have placed one natural ability in their debuts here.
  • In summary a pedigree likely to produce a slightly better than average 2yo winner but needing 6f+. Trainer's debuts at the course tend to place with the better types and this runner almost reaches that profile.  Profile [71]
  • May 1st: Newmarket
    Post Race
  • Mild each-way support from 20/1 to 141 and finished as fourth favourite. Looked a typical neat trainer type but slightly lighter build and narrower than the 'big lads' in the field. In line with his trainer's debuts he was not hard fit.
  • Broke ok and settled in midfield and around 2 lengths off a solid, but not strong early pace. Slightly outpaced and needed to be driven as the pace increase from 2f out. Lost ground to the front 4 in this part of the race but pulled away from the moderate types. Beaten 4 lengths+ and the right side of a 5 length gap back to the rest.
  • A good debut by trainer standards in a tough race and promising for useful+ form but unlikely to be up to the quality of the first four in later races.  Profile [64]
  • May 13th: Hamilton
    6f Maiden
  • Steps up to 6f after getting outpaced in a good maiden on debut at 5f. Looked just a possible useful type and interesting that he is sent to Hamilton to try to ensure he breaks his maiden.
  • The trainer has run seven 2yos at the course on their STO runs in the period 2002-4. These have been average to just about useful types at best and only 2 of the 7 have won (the two 2004 runners for Sheikh Mohammed) after all five were beaten in 2002-3.
  • Solid improvement. Profile [75]
