Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 5th: Declared for
Folkestone 5f Maiden
  • Bred by Darley Stud and owned by Ahmed Al Maktoum.
  • Appears not to have gone to the sales and qualifies for this race because his sire's yearlings had a median price below the qualifying limit for the race.
  • Second season sire who showed more speed as a 2yo than his pedigree promised (trained by M Channon who is notable for getting 5-6f wins with 'pedigrees' that other trainers would not).
  • Made a below average start with his 2yos in 2004 with only 7 winners and no real quality. The wins covered the range 5.7f (uphill) to 10f and he had no 5f winner. He did not have a winner before June 30th (trained by his old friend M Channon) which was at 7f.
  • Sire has had a debut winner over 5f in 2005 but in a slow race which was not a true 5f test.
  • Dam was unraced at 2yo and an 8f winner at 3yo rating in the 70s and has been retained by the Maktoum family to breed from.
  • Trainer does not target FTO wins and those that win on debut are normally his best runners (or targeted debuts for specific owners).
  • Trainer has had six debut runs in 2005 with a mix of competent and inexperienced. He has had two debut wins (at 85/40f & 4/1), one by a probable 'natural' in a weak race and one by a better type for one of his 'specific' owners (Jaber Abdullah).
  • The other four debuts have been one place in a seller by a physical type that was better than the others in the race and three unplaced who never looked likely to win their races (at 5/2, 4/1 and 11/2).
  • In summary an acceptable pedigree in quality terms for the race. Does not have a 5f pedigree although the softer ground for many races in 2005 so far has meant many races have not been true 5f speed tests. The trainer also can get 5f wins with this type especially by an early debut. Likely to be favourite but vulnerable unless a better type and professional on debut. Hints from the betting market may be very subtle. Profile [62]
  • April 5th: Folkestone
    Post Race
  • Was supported from 3/1 to 2/1 second favourite. Ran a typical but acceptable debut by trainer standards. Broke slightly slow and had to be pushed along to settle third behind a solid pace but travelled ok once set. Moved up quite well inside two furlongs from home to challenge for the lead as Magidene stalled. However, lack of fitness and possibly some pace, meant he didn't go on and got into a battle with Red Emerald (on her second run) and slightly faded late.
  • Looked an average 70+ winner on this.  Estimate [63]
  • April 14th: Ripon
    5f Maiden
  • Backed on debut and ran a reasonable race by trainer standards without looking above average. However the form of that race looks moderate with the third and fourth well beaten since and a moderate time.
  • Trainer has only had two STO runs in 2005 and they have not providing strong clues to how much improvement to expect. Trainer has two STO runners today and this one chosen to go to Ripon while the other goes to Newmarket.
  • The trainer won the race in 2002 with an average '74' rated type maiden winner for the Maktoum family.
  • In summary has the feel of a 70ish maiden winner but likely to be able to run to that level today. Profile [70]
  • April 14th: Ripon
    Post Race
  • Ran a very disappointing race in testing ground as 7/4fav. Was never really travelling comfortably and faded quickly after halfway having been around 3 lengths off the pacemaker (and winner) at that point.  Estimate [38]
  • April 29th: Musselburgh
    5f Maiden
  • The form of his debut second at Folkestone looks over-rated in retrospect with the others in that race well beaten since. Even so he was very disappointing at Ripon and never looked likely to get into the race. The ground was quite testing there and is a possible excuse but probable that he is not as good as initially thought.
  • Unlikely to be helped by a flat & fast 5f here. Downgrade overall rating.  Profile [62]
  • May 23rd: Carlisle
    5f Maiden
  • Non runner at Musselburgh and runs on stiffer track here after a break. Profile [62]
