Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 29th: Musselburgh
5f Maiden
  • Made good price at Doncaster St Leger sales.
  • By a first season sire who made a solid impression at the sales. He has had 10 runners so far with one minor STO win and another has placed on debut..
  • Dam was a cheapish sales buy and ran only 3 times, all at 5f. She has produced sprinters of various quality and her yearlings have sold well (although the price hasn't always correlated with the quality).
  • Trainer used to have his own small stable but was appointed as private trainer in owner J. Fretwell's new, purpose built stables in 2004.
  • When the trainer had his only stables the better 2yos used to rate around 60-65 on debut and improve 14lbs STO. Interesting to see his approach in his new position.
  • The trainer has had two runners so far in 2005. The expensive runner for this owner ran a poor debut after each-way support but improved notably STO. He has had one 2yo run for a different owner who won at 14/1 on debut in a poor to moderate Southwell race. That runner was probably just physically superior to the others rather than being 'wound up' on debut.
  • In summary the pedigree to develop into an above average 6f 2yo sprinter. Limited evidence but the trainer seems to be getting his runners competent on debut without being close to final rating. However, given that the owner has a range of 2yos it would be likely that this one has shown some natural ability/readiness.  Profile [63]
  • April 29th: Musselburgh
    Post Race
  • ran for a trainer in a new role and this was his second runner for the owner he is private trainer to. The previous runner had made a moderate debut on softer ground but shown improved form to place second NTO. He had a surprise 14/1 FTO winner four days before in a poor race at Southwell and following this win has two wins from three debut runs. Steady at 8/1 third favourite in a market with an odds-on M Johnston runner and an expensive T Easterby 2yo on debut.
  • Looked smallish (possibly smaller than Myths And Verses) but a neat, ready sprinter with just above average build. Did not look fully fit but showed more stretch and reach in the last 1.5 furlongs.
  • Broke ok and travelled in third to halfway where he had to be driven for a short period probably as the race quickened. He was given a hard ride from 1.5f out (the runner-up was just hands-and-heels) and led from before 1f out and kept on well enough. Won in a slowish time and the overall form is moderate. However, he was not wound-up here and he should show good improvement to STO. Looked likely to be limited by his size so not able to rate too far above 70-75 after mid-season. Estimate [61]
  • May 18th: Goodwood
    5f Listed
  • Achieved a moderate level of form on debut but should show solid improvement here but from a low base. The owner likes to target high level 2yo races but this is his only winner of the season so far and his only entry in this race.  Profile [73 + 3 = 76]
  • May 30th: Sandown
    5f Listed
  • Received each-way support to 25/1 7th favourite of 8 in a muddling race at Goodwood. Other than the winner who quickened 2L clear at halfway the other runners were closely group near the rail for much of the race and spent a lot of time getting in each other's way.
  • Had the best draw next to the rail and made a good start and in second after 1F but Crocodile Bay leant across him to take the lead. The group wider off the rail then pressed up to leave him second rank on the rail but always going to need a gap to challenge. Tracked the pace by 1.5L at halfway and travelled ok. Made progress to try to challenge inside 1F out but hampered by Crocodile Bay again drifting to the rail. Made some progress when switched around CB. Finished a close 6th.  Estimate [78]
  • Could have rated more highly at Goodwood with a clear run. First test of that the strength of that form where 5 runners finished in a heap and bumping each other. Trainer is reliable in choosing appropriate races for his horses.  Profile [87]
