5f Auction |
Made solid price at the Tattersalls Ireland sales.
By First Season Sire that won over 6f in first half of its 2yo season.
Sire made good impression at sales and likely to get some early sprint
winners.
The sire has has made a solid start with two 5f winners in slow races early
on. He has a number of moderate types make their debuts since.
Dam has a German pedigree and won as a 2yo there.
Younger trainer is still developing his style. He decided in 2002 to target
2yo racing and brought in an agent to help with the sales buys. This lead
to an excellent season in 2003 including Group 1 winner with owner bred
Milk It Mick. 2004 was, as would be expected, less good and the stable
seemed to have illness problems to add to a less good group.
Along with the change in buying policy in 2002 he also said that he felt
he had been too obsessed with fitness and intended to make less ready debut.
In line with this he has had 6 FTO winners from 71 2yos in 2003-4 and these
have tended to be the best 2yos.
The very earliest runners in 2004 were more competitive as a group (making
places and the superior Berkhamsted winning) than in 2003 when none of
the early runners placed (including Milk It Mick).
His two runners in 2005 have both been chosen as competitive early types
but have needed the debut to develop from
In summary the trainer does not target strong debut runs although a solid
debut from an average+ type could be enough to win this race. The trainer
seems to choose his early season debuts for two reasons. The good one is
that they are competitive 2yo types and likely to win at some point. The
bad reason is that they are poor to useless and being sized up for a seller
or claimer somewhere. The price and pedigree suggest this one ought to
be better than poor or useless. The negative is why is she making her debut
so far north? The trainer rarely brings runners to Catterick and the only
debut in 2004 was by the moderate Fasylitator (who cost more than this
one). Topweight filly in the race and gives 1lb to the unpenalised colts.

Drifted notably from 3/1 to 11/2 on debut and the vibes were that she was
not ready to compete strongly. Broke ok and tracked the average pace by
3L at halfway. Made slight progress 2F out as the weaker runners faded.
Plugged on and closing on the stalled leaders at the finish (as other outpaced
runners were doing further back). Estimate [57]
Made a standard trainer debut in a poor race at Catterick. Other runners
from that race have competed poorly since. Trainer's two STO runs have
been variable with the better type improving notably and the moderate to
average on showing just mild rating increase (she may have an attitude
problem). Profile [65 + 7 = 72]

5f Maiden Fillies' |
7/2 at Haydock in a moderate to average race. Ran on the stands' side of
a large group where the first two finishers ran. Held up by the jockey
and 4L off the leaders (who set a good pace on the far side of the group
and stalled or faded). Just moderate progressing the second half of the
race to dead heat for fourth with a stablemate (25/1 and on debut). Looked
a typical sire type, smallish but with solid build but still not that fit.
Estimate
[59]
Runs only 6 days after not showing much progress from debut last time and
has not looked to have full 5f pace in either run. In each recent season
the trainer has had a number of runners who have developed well in later
season to showed improved form in nurseries. Is she one of that type?

June 2nd: Brighton
5.3f Maiden |
4/5f favourite at Bath in the slower division of the race. Used her experience
to get to the rail and lead for 3f. Always tracked by a 25/1 newcomer and
headed by here after 2f out. Showed a little response but always being
held. Estimate [66]
Showed a little improvement at Bath but still obviously vulnerable to runners
with average ability. Ought to handle the track although a slight niggle
in that she has looked short of 5f pace and may get a little outpaced downhill.
However, ought to be plugging on in the uphill finish. Profile

5f Group 2 Fillies' |
8/11f at Brighton and a moderate effort in winning. Travelled ok behind
an average pace set by a moderate runner. Went on after halfway and a length
leader before 1f out. But her lacked of pace showed and she hung a little
right and just plugged on to hold off a Prescott runner (drifted in the
market) on an ordinary debut. Estimate [62]
Has looked moderate and not up to 5f pace in an average maiden so should
be too slow here. Trainer runs two and this looks the second string on
jockeys. Profile [68]
