Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 14th: Ripon
5f Maiden
  • Retained for moderate price at Goffs sales.
  • Sire now in his fourth season and made good impression in 2002 with his first 2yos. After two ok seasons with less runners this season should see him with more runners in recognition of the good start in 2002. He can get early 5f types.
  • Dam has produced sprint 2yos rating up to the low 70s.
  • Trainer now in third season after regaining his licence. Had a good season in 2003 and gained an unwarranted reputation as a trainer who targets strong debut runs. In general only the best 2yo(s) in each season win.
  • FTO SP is not a strong indicator of likely performance except for obvious 'punts' (like Oh Dara at Catterick in 2004).
  • In summary a pedigree that could produce a minor sprint 2yo winner and sales price suggests a similar level. Trainer does not target FTO wins except with useful 2yos. This is his first runner of the season and will probably be at least 8-10lbs below final rating unless a very moderate type.  Profile [50]
  • May 4th: Chester
    5f Conditions
  • Drifted slightly to 12/1 fourth favourite. Set solid pace on soft ground and pulled away in the second half of the race as the favourite failed. He was slightly eased at the end. The time was moderate.  Estimate [74]
  • Clear winner on debut but the performances and profiles of the runners he beat cast a doubt over the value of the form. However, unusual for a trainer to have a debut winner unless they are useful. Difficult to place.  Profile [78]
  • May 4th: Chester
    Post Race
  • His debut win in a slow time on soft going had been difficult to read and the subsequent failure of the only runner to keep close to him there had made it more so. Drawn in 8 of 10 and no obvious confidence at 11/1 fifth favourite. Broke ok and settled 7th around 3 lengths off the pace after one furlong. As the leaders settled the pace down he then made an effort, at least 4 wide from the rail, to press the pacemakers at halfway. Faded from 1.5f out as the leaders stalled. Ran below expectations but it had been difficult to set his level. Capable of a higher rating on a more even race run. Estimate [66]
  • May 19th: Newcastle
    5f Novice
  • Ran below expectations in the Lily Agnes but ran wide and not in an entirely efficient manner. Can improve a little from that but the trainer's sprinters tend to be close to their best form by STO. He had two 2yos that showed improved form in later season in 2004 that had made earlier season debuts. However they improved for stepping up to 7f+ and presumably some physical development in later season.
  • Gives 5lb+ because of his penalty for the win.  Profile [75 - 5 = 70]
  • June 16th: York
    5f Group 3
  • 15/2 fourth favourite at Newcastle. Pressed the leader to past halfway and took over after Angaric faded and continued to lead. More than a length clear into the last furlong and looked likely to hold on. Slightly stalled and caught late by a runner who had been held up.  Estimate [73]
  • Form of his Newcastle race is mixed with the 3rd having run 2nd in the Coventry (being allowed to front run rather than being held up), the 4th well beaten in an ordinary maiden and the 5th winning an ordinary Catterick maiden (then beaten in a modest Novice). Overall it seems more likely that Pacific Pride improved notably rather the the form being notably underrate.
  • Trainer has (tried) to run his best 2yo in either the Coventry or this race in the last 2 seasons.  Profile [80]
