Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
March 19th: Entered for -
Lingfield 5f (AW)
Conditions Race (D1)
  • Retained for relatively cheap price even for TO2 sales.
  • By an underused sire who has a solid record in producing competitive, sprint 2yos, some useful or better. Ok to produce early 5f runners.
  • The dam has produced three previous foals to the same sire. All were winners at some level and trained by B. R. Millman. The best runner from the dam made the earliest debut of these three. Sales price poor given the dam's record.
  • Reviewed at sales and small and dumpy and 'bits and pieces' and a notably poor mover. Rated only 58 and an unlikely winner in the season unless at seller level.
  • Trainer particularly likes the sire.
  • Trainer targets 2yo racing and has a group ready early. These will be a mix of abilities. The moderate runners will be close to their best on debut. The best runner(s) are targeted for debut wins, usually at Nottingham.
  • Trainer has entered 4 probably to ensure at least one runner.
  • In summary a poor physical type at the sales and probably running early to provide the best chance of being competitive at a low level. Unlikely to be good enough to compete here even if professional and running to it's best on debut. Profile [48]
  • March 20th: Post Race
  • Forecast to be 2nd or 3rd favourite but drifted to 10/1 before minor backing to be 8/1 5th favourite.
  • Paddock Review showed he had improved from the sales and muscle and movement in front improved.
  • Showed good readiness to track the pacesetters and go clear with two others in the last 1 furlong. Showed good reach in front and used his length well.
  • Race run in slow time, slower than all but one of 2004 races for example.
  • Became the fourth winner (and third debut winner) for the dam by the sire Makbul.
  • Probably capable of rating just over 70 in early season but likely to struggle in competitive novice and conditions races. Estimate [62]
  • March 31st : Declared
    5f Conditions - Brocklesby
    at Doncaster
  • Carries a 4lb penalty for his win at Lingfield. The forma of that race looks poor other than himself and the runner-up Danjet who is in the race and won 2 days earlier (but without having to improve from her Lingfield debut).
  • Trainer has had two runners and both have won on debut. Likely that this is the second string of the two winners and this type of race the high-point of his ambitions. [Makabul probably being saved for better races].
  • Probably capable of running to 70+ rating here but with 4lb penalty  short of the normal 'class' required to win the race although competitive for a place.  Profile [72-4 = 68]
  • March 31st: Doncaster
    Post Race
  • What an irritating yet loveable broodmare La Belle Vie is! She has now visited the sire Makbul to produce each of her last four foals. In April 2001 I stood in the rain at Nottingham and watched the first of these four (Maktavish) win on his 2yo debut by 8 lengths at 7/1. In 2003 it was Warwick and the second (La Vie Est Belle) finished 6th on debut and looked moderate but then developed through the season to get a rating of OR78. In 2004 it was standing at Windsor while the unconsidered Happy Event won on debut at 20/1 and developed to an OR86 mark. The fourth of those foals is this one, seen at the sales and a poor specimen and the sales price showed that no-one else liked the look of him either. So, you stand at Lingfield in March 2005 and what happens, he wins on debut comfortably at 8/1. Ok, you think, so that wasn't much of a race and he was the best of the group. Instead, he improves further and wins this comfortably under a penalty, not quite in the Maktavish rating level but better than the other two at the same stage of the season.
  • There's two points to ponder here, firstly you have to be very careful when assessing the offspring of this dam because they always surprise (and this goes for the sire to some extent as well). The second is that we need to get a syndicate together, we're going to go to the Doncaster St Leger sales and buy the next yearling from La Belle Vie. We aren't going to care if it's four foot tall and one leg is on sideways, that'll make it cheap (like the other yearlings listed above). Then we send it to R Millman and wait for the winner's cheque to arrive and a big punt on it's debut run. Are you in?
  • The race lacked the quality runners of recent years but this was still a good performance from him and the way he was keeping on at the end suggested he can improve further at 6f. He again drifted in the market to 9/2 third favourite and difficult to know whether this was because the trainer knows he has limitations or because the connections do not bet. Estimate [81]
  • May 18th: Goodwood
    5f Listed
  • The form of his Brockleby run looks slightly less good given the performances of nearly all the runnners behind him since and also because he was notably more forward than most of the others. However, he was clearly better than that group nad has shown strong finishes in both his races.
  • His trainer has said he is better than Maktavish and that he has developed well since the start of the season. Needs to continue that improvement to win here.  Profile [89]
