Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
March 30th: Declared
Folkestone 5f Maiden
  • Above average price for DSL sales.
  • By First Season Sire that won over 6f in first half of its 2yo season. Sire made good impression at sales and likely to get some early sprint winners.
  • The sire has already had a minor winner with a runner that cost 800 gns at the sales and his other runner looked an ok type given the 2.6k gns sales price.
  • This runner was reviewed at the sales and rated 68 he was relatively big and heavily built (in line with the sales price) but was lengthy, deep and not particularly athletic. He looked to have ok size to develop but looked more a 7f type on set up and slightly below average chance of being competitive at 2yo.
  • Now, given the sales review it's surprising to see him run this early and if he shows 5f speed and is competitive in this race and (probably) then wins STO it would be a big plus for his sire who has given hints already that he will fulfil his yearling's sales promise.
  • The dam was unraced and her 4 previous foals haven't done much racing on the flat and this wouldn't have helped the sales price. Given the dam's record it is another reasonably good sign he runs this early.
  • Trainer does not target FTO wins and those that win on debut are normally his best runners (or targeted debuts for specific owners).
  • Trainer has had four debut runs so far with the usual mix of competent and inexperienced with one win (by a probable 'natural' in a weak race), one place in a seller by a physical type that was better than the others in the race and two unplaced who never got into their races.
  • The trainer has had two runners in this race in 2002-4 and one won (having previously run in the Brocklesby) and the other finished 2nd and won STO. Both were 80s types.
  • In summary an interesting early run for a type with scope and size but not promising 5f speed early on sales review. Unless superior likely to find something to beat him while placing. One to assess closely for future potential. Estimate [63]

    March 30th: Folkestone
    Post Race
  • Ran for owner Jaber Abdullah who counts as one of the trainer's 'specific important' owners for whom he targets stronger than average debuts (this was missed in profile). Each season the trainer has passed on the best of the cheapest buys to this owner (Majestic Desert in 2003, Arabian Dancer in 2004 for example) and presumably they had been identified as better types well before they ran (although they would not be 'wound up' on debut).
  • This runner started a solid favourite suggesting a better type and run was expected. In 2005 both of the trainer's debut winners have shown some market support although the effect is quite subtle and the vibes can be difficult to pick up. This is because his runners tend to start at shortish prices on debut anyway because of his 'important 2yo trainer' status. But compare this one to the vibes surrounding the debut of the more expensive Rundear on the previous day.
  • The other point to note is that both debut winner in 2005 have been professional on debut and have pressed the pacemaker before taking over when the front runner faded. The other debuts have been in a variety of positions including off the back.
  • Although this was a slow race and not a true 5f test it is still a good sign that this runner could win this early over 5f rating up to expectations. He looked a 7f development type on sales review and would expect this runner to develop to an 80+ rating at least. Estimate [65]
  • April 12th: Declared for
    Newmarket 5f Conditions
  • Trainer entered three and runs both of his previous winners this season. This one has the senior jockey riding.
  • Trainer had similar runner for the same owner in 2002 who finished 5th in a tougher race than this is.
  • Made a likeable debut for one of the trainer's major owners and has the profile to be 80+ rated at least. Expect solid improvement here. Penalised 6lb for previous win. Profile [80]
  • April 12th: Newmarket
    Post Race
  • Won a slow, non 5f 'speed', race at Folkestone on debut. At the sales he did not look a 5f type and it was a slight surprise to see him run and win this early in the season over 5f.
  • He was steady around 7/4 second favourite. From an early stage in this race he showed a 6f+ 'reacher' action rather than a faster 5f gallop. He travelled ok with the average pace but could not increase his pace by speeding up his action when the race quickened after 2f out. He was able to lengthen slightly further but did not have the basic pace to get by Lord Jack Flash and Cool Creek took 2 lengths+ out of him in a relatively short distance. However, he was still moving forward and showing some slow gain on the faster pair in the last uphill section.
  • At the weights he comes out as the best performance but it would be very hard to see him ever beating Cool Creek in a fast 5f. He looked like a horse that can develop further over 6f and probably 7f as the season progresses. Estimate [79]
  • June 10th: Chepstow
    6f Novice
  • Steps up to 6f after a two month break and looking to lack the pace to compete with specialist 5f 2yos. Ought to be better for 6f but interesting to see how he handles this notably undulating course.
  • Trainer has used the race for previous winners owned by the Maktoum family or their associates. In 2002 he ran Bravo Ragasso for this owner - J Abduller (linked to Darley Stud) - who had also run in the same Newmarket Conditions race as this one. The latest three runners have been below Listed class with ratings in the 80s their best level.
  • The form of the Newmarket conditions race is probably overrated although only Lord Jack Flash has run from the race since. He has not won. Moderate improvement and vulnerable to a faster type in a slow race. Profile [80]
