Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 16th: Nottingham
5f Maiden
  • Made solid price at Doncaster St Leger sales. Slightly above the trainer's normal top level.
  • Sire has mixed pedigree but has an acceptable record with 2yos since being repatriated. Gets winners over a variety of distances but can get odd 5f winners. Wins usually come from May onwards.
  • Dam has speed pedigree. Has produced a 5f 2yo winner.
  • Trainer has moderate record with 2yos. Debuts, especially in early season are normally uncompetitive, development runs and looking to peak on STO.
  • Trainer has had two uncompetitive debuts already this season in line with his normal record.
  • He has entered two in this race and this one has an apprentice riding and the other a senior jockey.
  • In summary a solid pedigree to be a sprint winner at 2yo but trainer has a poor record. Unlikely to be ready to perform near his best on debut.  Profile [48]
  • April 16th: Nottingham
    Post Race
  • 33/1 on debut and lost three lengths with a slow break. In midfield around 3 lengths off the pacemaker until outpaced two furlongs out and faded. A typically uncompetitive trainer debut run although beat his 'preferred' runner who was 20/1.  Estimate [36]
  • April 23rd: Leicester
    5f Maiden
  • Trainer has moderate record with 2yos and early runs tend to be poor. He has had two 2yos run STO in 2005 and both have run to a lower rating than their debut off short breaks. No reason to expect any notable difference with this one.  Profile [44]
  • April 23rd: Leicester
    Post Race
  • Rated 64 on paddock review. Medium size and with a solid build and notably strong behind (the shape and build of the thigh/gaskin/buttocks is absolutely typical of the type the trainer has, no matter what shape or size otherwise that area always looks the same). Slightly short and and still 'up' behind and a slightly 'bits & pieces' walker because of this. Should be able to rate 60s.
  • Opened 50/1 and finished at 40/1. Looked to have prospects of mid-60s ratings at best. Ran roughly to expectations and trainer tends to have runners which develop from debut to 'peak' 3TO. Might be able to find a minor race but not one to follow given the trainer's record overall.  Estimate [51]
  • April 30th: Thirsk
    5f Novice
  • Runs 7 days after STO for a trainer who tends to target 3TO 'peaks'. First test of the strength of a slow, muddling race at Leicester where the favourite disappointed. Ought to be able to rate in the 60s here. The only maiden in the field and the winners are penalised either 4lb or 8lb.  Profile [64 + 8 = 72]
  • April 30th: Thirsk
    Post Race
  • 28/1 outsider and ran a week after a 4th in a slow maiden race at Leicester. Tracked the ok pace for 2 lengths at halfway (two of the previous winners couldn't). Drifted left to centre track with the stalled pacemakers inside 2f out and looked to have a chance to win with the runners spread across the track. Faded in the last half furlong but probably showed his best form. Now had three runs in 14 days on softer ground and shown improvement but only to a moderate level. Hard to estimate what the next step in this 'plan' is. Estimate [58]
  • May 16th: Windsor
    5f Conditions
  • The form of his previous two runs looks better in light of the performances of the horses that finished in front of him. Has his first run on firmer ground here after a reasonable break.
  • Trainer's runner do not tend to show improvement after 3TO. He has had a previous runner in the race unplaced in 2003. She was one of his few 2yo winners but was not up to the class of that race.  Profile [68 + 3 = 71]
  • May 16th: Windsor
    Post Race
  • 25/1 6th favourite. Ran a similar race to Thirsk in finishing reasonably close to the placed horses but never being competitive. Around 2L off an average pace at halfway he was slightly outpaced 2F out as the race quickened and then plugged on. Trainer has a poor record with getting 2yo wins and he needs a drop in class to have a chance of a maiden win. Estimate [66]
  • May 24th: Lingfield
    5f AW Maiden Div I
  • Drops back to maiden race after finishing unplaced in better races and lacking the pace to compete but plugging on to finish reasonable close. Switches to AW which is a regular trainer tactic.
  • Overall view that he lacks the pace for 5f but this is a weaker race so this is the chance to confirm that against lesser horses. Profile [67]
  • June 16th: York
    5f Group 3
  • 7/2 at Lingfield despite a moderate race. Driven along after a furlong and 3L behind at halfway. Just plugged on in the straight and slightly hampered but uncompetitive overall.  Estimate [55]
  • Profile [68]
  • July 2nd: Nottingham
    5f Maiden
  • 200/1 at York and either he showed notable improvement or he drags the form level down. At present his rating has been upgraded and his overall performance at York suggests a better effort by him. In a race with a strong pace he led after 1f and was in 3rd just 1L off the leaders (finished 1st & 3rd) at halfway, Starting to stall and fade but still in fourth with 1f left and faded to 6th. He showed more pace (which other 65-72 types couldn't) and hung on longer than expected. Estimate [79]
  • Trainer's record with 2yos can make assessing his runners tricky. He clearly feels this is his best 2yo and has run him in tough races where he has never been competitive but has not looked entirely out of place. The trouble is that when dropped to an easier race on the AW he didn't show his form. It's possible he shows his best form on firmer going on a flat, straight track. If the Norfolk Stakes run is correctly rated (this is a test of that form) then he should have a strong chance here against another solid type (Out The Ordinary who beat him on softer going at Leicester). But the trainer's record with 2yos is offputting.  Profile [74]
