Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
June 1st: Nottingham
5f Maiden Fillies'
  • Owned by Godolphin and bred by H. Al Tajir.
  • By second season sire that made a very good start with his first 2yos in 2004 although no winner before June 26th. He has made a good start in 2005 with two winners from three runners, one over 5f although hints that he would be better over 6f.
  • Dam made her debut on June 2nd (Leicester) for this trainer and finished 2nd at 9/1. She went on to win the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot on her second run two weeks later. She also won the Cherry Hinton over 6f. Her first foal is an average 10f 3yo winner who did not make his debut until the last week of the season.
  • Fifth 2yo runner of the season for a good trainer with the best raw material and resources available. Before 2004 he used to train only the occasional 2yo as Darley/Godolphin used D Loder for their 2yo training. In 2004 they took the 2yo training 'in house' and Mr Suroor jumped into second place in the individual 2yos run table with 91. Of those 48 won and the strike rate was around 30%.
  • He targets maiden wins in the first two runs and the better 2yos step up to high class races.
  • His first runners in 2004 were at a similar time of the season from the York Dante meeting onward. He had 4 debuts in May and the two York debut were beaten and won STO before the end of May. The other two debuts included one FTO winner and one very disappointing filly who was an expensive US 2yo buy. Two of the four ran at Royal Ascot but were useful types rather than the stable 'stars'.
  • The first runner for the stable looked an average filly at best and she finished well beaten after losing ground at the start. The second won an average Newmarket maiden in a very slow time after being allowed to set an easy paced lead. The third intended runner was withdrawn after panicking in the stalls. The fourth looked another ordinary filly who lost ground at the start from a wide draw at Lingfield and never go beyond midfield under a quiet ride.
  • In summary the trainer must have some better fillies that he intends to run at Royal Ascot and it's hard to believe that the two we've seen so far are up to it (Perfect Beat & Chaski). None of the FTO runners have looked really professional yet.  Profile [70]
  • June 13th: Warwick
    5f Maiden Fillies
  • Opened 7/4 and finished there after going out to 5/2. Taken to post early and wore a blanket for stalls entry. Race run in driving rain and the first race on the card and rain starting to get in.
  • Broke ok but got a slight bump from Oranges And Lemons who broke right handed.  Ran freely in the first furlong and held by the jockey. 2L off the lead in the last rank after 1f. Travelled in behind ok and 5th just over 1L off the lead at halfway. Made an effort to go through to 2nd before 1f out as others faded. Once clear she then hung left while making the effort. The jockey just rode hands and heels inthe last furlong after getting her balanced. Bigger than the winner - Playful.  Estimate [61]
  • Godolphin debuts have been mixed and below the normal standard so far. She clearly has quirks (TP early, blanket, hanging) but made an acceptable debut. Profile [71]
