Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 2nd: Declared
for Doncaster Auction
  • Retained for a below average price at the DSL sales but receives only 1lb from the topweight colt in this auction race.
  • Reviewed at the sales and reasonable size and build for this group. However he was probably slightly too lengthy and slightly dip backed. Rated 64 but with the caveat that his length and set-up could nullify the advantages of his relative size.
  • Sire now in his fourth season and made good impression in 2002 with his first 2yos. After two ok seasons with less runners 2005 should see him with more runners in recognition of the good start in 2002. He can get early 5f types.
  • Dam has produced on competitive 70+ rated 2yo that was retained at the sales for less than this one.
  • Trainer has good record with older runners but approach with 2yos difficult to assess. Overall record moderate. Earliest debuts often of mixed ability but run to competent level within their ability.
  • Trainer has two runners in the race and this one the possible second string on jockeys but D Gibson may ride the other one because he can do 8-2.
  • In summary and ok pedigree for a minor 2yo and a mixed report from the sales. The trainer at least gets his runners competent on debut although they don't tend to progress. His record in getting winners is moderate. Profile [49]
  • April 2nd: Doncaster
    Post Race
  • Put in the most interesting debut of the group. Noted at sales as being an acceptable type for this level of race but with the caveat that he may not be able to carry his size. He proved that is not a problem by pulling, running quite freely and showing natural pace.
  • He did best of the front runners and was only beaten by a runner with previous experience. Drifted from 10/1 to 14/1 in a race where the trainer's other runner - Looking North - received each-way support from 25/1 to 12/1 and finished unplaced (not unusual).
  • A good debut showing some natural ability although the sales review and trainer's methods suggest he may not rate much more highly and need to win in the next two runs. Estimate [61]
  • April 12th: Declared
    Musselburgh 5f Auction
  • Ran a good debut in the context of this race at Doncaster. Was typically ready on debut for his trainer but showed natural pace and kept on well considering he had run freely in the race.
  • Trainer's runners tend not to improve much from debut and go 'off the boil' from 3TO on so he probably needs to win now. However ought to be able to reach his sales rating at least on the natural ability he showed. Penalised 2lb for sales price. Profile [68 - 2 = 66]
  • April 12th: Musselburgh
    Post Race
  • 8/13fav and ran a poor race below expectations. At the sales he looked an ok size & build but a question mark over whether he was athletic enough to carry his weight. His run at Doncaster appeared to suggest that would not be a problem. Here, that problem may have resurfaced because he led for 3f and then appeared to become unbalanced and rolled around before getting a more organised and plugging on for second in a poor race.  Estimate [52]
  • As well as the issue of keeping balanced under pressure he again showed signs of a headstrong nature (quite common with runners for this trainer). He also gave trouble at the post.
  • May 3rd: Catterick
    5f Auction
  • Ran well on debut and given the performances of the 1st and 4th (hung left and gave 3rd away) from that race since it looks a solid effort at its level. He disappointed NTO as odds-on favourite and raised issues over how straightforward he is.
  • Overall the trainer does not have a good record of getting 2yos back to their early rating levels once the form has started to go down. On the form of his first run he would be a good favourite in this race but he'd struggle to win this if he gives the Musselburgh run. How will he handle this faster, downhill track? for example. Penalised 2lb for sales price. Profile [60 - 2 = 58]
  • May 21st:  Carlisle
    6f Auction
  • 6/4f at Catterick in a moderate race. Tracked the early pacemaker at an average pace by 1L at halfway. Went in with a smaller filly who actively challenged him for the lead from 2F out. Lead into the final furlong but outbattled by the filly and faded late.  Estimate [55]
  • Steps up to 6f and on a stiff track. Has looked short of finishing pace (and/or gets unbalanced) in flat 5f races. Profile [58]
