Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
May 3rd: Bath
5f Maiden
  • Made lowish to middling price at the Doncaster St Leger sales.
  • Reviewed at the sales and rated 64. He was medium sized and just over medium build. Overall he was 'medium', in proportion and unremarkable.
  • Second season sire made a moderate to average impression in 2004 with a limited number of 2yos. The winners and the better types were notable for needing 7f+ later in the season to show their form.
  • The dam was a 12f 3yo winner in Ireland and her previous runners have need 7f+ at 2yo to show average winning form.
  • Trainer does not target strong debuts and runs two in this race. This is probably the second string.
  • In summary this looks likely to be a development run close to home for a runner needing 6f+. [49]
  • May 10th: Yarmouth
    6f Auction
  • 25/1 as second string on debut in a very muddling race which was the slowest 5f race run at Bath for many seasons. Broke slowly and lost three lengths and got behind but race in the centre of the course as the pacemakers went far side. Missing the pace and racing in the centre were advantages and he plugged on to pick up the 'walking' pacemakers to nearly win in a real 'slog' of a race. Estimate [52]
  • His debut second is very weak and in can't be read literally. All we really learnt about him is that he can stay on at the end of a slow 5f race. He steps up to 6f at the first opportunity. Trainer's runners tend to progress to be close to their peak STO but he has had a relatively short break.  Profile [63 - 2 = 61]
  • May 24th: Ripon
    5f Maiden
  • 7/4f at Yarmouth. Pressed the average pace to halfway and led 2f from home and slightly increased the pace which had the 6f types under pressure. Headed by a bigger newcomer inside the last furlong but kept on for a clear second from moderate types.  Profile [59]
  • Drops back to 5f although appeared to stay 6f well enough on debut and has a pedigree apparently better for 6f+. Sales review suggested a 60s rater.  Profile [67]
  • June 10th: Chepstow
    6f Novice
  • 11/4jf favourite after support at Ripon in a race on softish going where the field split into 2 groups. Raced against the stands' side rail and set the pace there and the group 2L up on the far side at halfway. Went clear of his group in the last furlong and held on a little comfortably from the leader of the far side group.  Estimate [74]
  • Steps back up to 6f after just an average 5f performance in softer conditions. The second from that race has failed in a 5f race at Newcastle since and the level of form is unproven.
  • Trainer has entered a previous winner in each of the previous three seasons. These have been 2yos that have not been of high enough quality to compete in Listed+ races and this type of race has been the highpoint of there season. He has had a 3rd and a 4th and his runner in 2004 was a non-runner but here first win had come in a claimer.
  • In summary a profile of a 6f runner with this type of race as his upper limit.  Profile [78]
