May 4th: Chester 5f Maiden	Made high price at the Doncaster St Leger Sales. Especially notable given the dam's age. Sire now in his fourth season and made good impression in 2002 with his first 2yos. After two ok seasons with less runners this season should see him with more runners in recognition of the good start in 2002. He can get early 5f types. Sire has already had a good 5f winner (who runs in the Lily Agnes today) and a good placer. Old dam cost $300k and raced for Hamdam Al Maktoum, won the Hilary Needler at 2yo long before it became a Listed race. Has a patchy record at stud and produced only one minor winner since her useful 1996 foal. The trainer does not strongly target 2yo racing and has said part-jokingly that he's 'the worst 2yo trainer in the country'. This is nonsense of course and he brings the same planning and consistency to 2yo racing as he does overall. This is a very early debut run for him and his earliest debuts in 2003-4 have included FTO winners. He plans STO runs with most 2yos and those expected to win on debut normally have a Listed+ race target within 21 days. He had a FTO winner with a useful colt 3 days ago who was his first 2yo runner of the season. In summary an interesting runner for a trainer who seems to be changing his strategy with 2yos a little. His earliest debuts seem to be competent and ready to compete nowadays. The high sales price suggests a good physical type. Moderately drawn in 10 of 16. Profile [63]
