March 27th:
Entered for
Musselburgh
5f Maiden |
Above average price for the DOC sales.
First season sire made 6f May debut at 2yo and superior 6-7f runner. Made
solid impression at the sales and yearlings sold well.
B2yoR rated 32 of his yearlings and they were a solid group if lacking
real stars.
Dam was 60s rated AW winner.
Reviewed at Sales and small but with ok build and strong quarters, especially
behind. Rated 68 and a likely minor sprint winner at 2yo.
Trainer tends to identify his 2yos capable of early wins before the season
starts and that is a big plus point for this one entered this early. He
has two entered in this race.
Trainer's debut runners in March tend to place but not quite be ready to
win.
Trainer often uses the course for very early season runs. Had his best
2yo in 2003 beaten into 2nd in this race at 4/6 fav for example. That runner
looked the winner until fading in the last half furlong and proved to be
better than the runner-up.
In summary the trainer has two similar types entered for the race and the
chosen runner should be competitive to run to 60s on debut. Profile

One of three trainer entries, comments from Musselburgh valid. Profile

April 12th: Declared
Musselburgh 5f Auction |
Was declared for the abandoned Redcar race in March 15 days ago. Trainer
has only run three 2yos so far and none has been competitive possibly suggesting
he is behind schedule.
Would expect a stronger showing from this runner. Penalised 4lb for his
sales price. Profile [62 - 4 = 58]

May 19th: Newcastle
5f Novice |
12/1 at Musselburgh in a moderate to average race. Tracked the pace by
2L at halfway and travelled ok but only moderate response when asked to
quicken and then a fade in the last furlong. Estimate [47]
Trainer has made a slow start to the season and did not have a competitive
early 2yo runner. He had a break of three weeks with no runner until one
of the early debuts ran 3 days ago. She showed a better performance
in a weaker race than this one. Should show a solid improvement but has
found a strong Newcastle race. Profile [61 + 7 = 68]

June 3rd: Thirsk
5f Maiden |
33/1 at Newcastle and ran a similar race to his debut. Tracked the pace
by 2L at halfway on the outside and appeared to be travelling well enough.
Asked for an effort but no progress. Estimate [60]
Declared for another Novice race at Redcar on May 30th but a non runner.
The trainer has been in notably good form in the last two weeks. Three
of the first 4 early season runners have now won (two in the last two days)
and he has also had two wins with a pacy filly. Upgrade profile for trainer
form and the way his early runners have developed. Profile [69]

July 9th: York
5f Maiden Post Race |
Won at Thirsk and showed natural pace and a comfortable winner. First time
he had finished a race off properly having travelled well in behind in
his previous two races but finding ltille. Estimate [74]
July 11th - Non runner for a 5f race at Bath on Firm.
July 14th - 5f on GS at Carlisle in Novice race. 7/2 and a poor
run. Just over 2L off the lead in midfield at halfway and made a little
progress but then faded to 6th. Estimate [48]
14/1 for this race in an early Nursery (started 5 days ago) in a period
when the topweights have been doing well (unless they have been obviously
overrated). GF going and an easy track and broke first and allowed to use
his pace to set a strong pace. Clear at halfway and went further away for
a comfortable win. Jockey said in interview they had been disaapointed
with his debut run (at a time when the trainer's 2yos did not compete well)
and he had always shown natural speed.
In hindsight can summarise his performances :
1) Travelled well and not pick up on firm ground on a flat track. Tracked
the leaders. Trainer did not have his 2yos ready at that stage and probably
lacked fitness.
2) Held up in 4th on a stiff track in a toughish race and again not quite
get home after travelling well enough.
3) Showed best form allowed to lead on firmish ground on a fast track and
won comfortably.
4) Disappointed when held up on a stiff track on easier ground at Carlisle.
Here, he had the conditions he needs (ground and fast course) and was allowed
to use his pace to front run (which he seems to prefer). Lacks size to
develop.
