SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-

Moved from Southwell Racecourse training base to Newport before the 2005 season.
Restarted training career in UK at the start of the 2003 season. He had previously trained in UK and Belgium and had problems and the businesses had failed. He was placed on the Jockey Club Forfeit List and was disqualified from going to racecourses until January 2003. He worked as R. Wilman's assistant at that trainer's second yard at Southwell and took out a training licence when his disqualification period ended.
Has run 15 and 17 2yos in 2003-04 and a similar number of runs in each season. 2004 was not as good a season as 2003 possibly because of illness in the stable. Most runners bought at the yearling and breeze up sales and the 2004 2yos cost around double the average of the cheap group of 2003 runners. The extra money he had to spend probably a reflection of the good impression he made in the 2003 'return' season. More of the 2004 runners were bought as 2yos at the breeze-up sales. A general point to note is that breeze-up sales are not the source of 'just-add-water' 2yo winners as per the general view.
He does not normally aim for FTO wins and targets STO for improved run. His three FTO winners in 2003-4 were made up from his two of his best runners (Red Power and Oh Dara) and a 33/1 surprise in a notably weak Brighton maiden race.
In 2003 there was no correlation between FTO SP and FTO performance nor overall ability. There were signs that this had changed a little in 2004 whereby the FTO winner was backed to 100/30 for a June 30th debut. This was by some margin the shortest debut SP (leaving aside the March and early April debuts where the mix of weak races and his 'shrewd' reputation led to his runners being at too short an SP on their debuts).
Some evidence that he has a poor record with runners that have a break of seven days or less with 5 unplaced runners from 5 runs including Windy Prospect in 2004. Trainer quoted as saying he felt he had run Windy Prospect too quickly after debut run.
