SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :- |
-
Good, organised and consistent trainer. Does not strongly target 2yo racing
but takes it very seriously with those that do run. His record has improved
in the last 3 seasons with more winners, wins and a wins-runs percentage
going at 30% (from around 14%). However, the number of runners is still
at the same level so these improvements probably reflect an increase in
the quality of the 2yos.
-
The 2yos are usually a roughly equal mix of owner-breds and those bought
at sales. The sales bought horses usually cost between 2k to 30k and therefore
his record is useful given the sales prices. Some of the sales puchases
are possibly buy-backs for breeders.
-
The key question for 2005 is whether this increase in quality in 2002-4
will be sustained. B2yoR rated 5 of his sales purchases at the Doncaster
St Leger sales and the buys were at the upper end of his price range. Four
of the buys were rated highly by B2yoR = out of the mares Catriona,
Come Together, Courtier
and Malcesine.
-
He assesses the 2yos at home before they run and they will normally make
their debuts from June onwards with the best months for FTO winners being
August and September. The strategy is to win a maiden or auction race within
the first two runs. The better runners will then step up to Novice/Conditions
races (he does not over-try his 2yos). Those 2yos lacking scope to
develop physically to 3yo may run in nurseries.
-
In line with the careful preparation and the later debuts his runners are
usually competent and ready to run to a high level within their ability
on debut. In the last three seasons, with the good quality groups of 2yos,
this has led to notably high FTO win percentages.
-
Not a betting stable and the FTO runners have tended to start at longer
SPs, including the winners. In 2002-3 he had 4 FTO winners from 18 runners
at SPs of 4/1, 10/1, 14/1 and 16/1 (i.e. a profit from blindly backing
his debut runners in both seasons). In 2004 he had 14 debuts and 5 winners
at 3/1, 7/2, 7/2, 10/1 and 11/1. Therefore, signs that the prices are getting
shorter but still a good profit.
-
Note that the 2004 FTO record of 5 wins and a profit was achieved despite
the fact that he had debut runners beaten at 13/8 and 15/8 and neither
of these horses won during the season.
-
Has a good record with runners showing a small (around 2-5lbs unless they
are superior) improvement on their second runs.
