2002 - 2004 Statistics

L. M. Cumani (Newmarket)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Has never targeted 2yo racing. He used to concentrate on higher class 2yo wins and getting horses ready for 3yo careers. With decline in stable numbers and strength he has added a few horses bought to run as 2yos.
  • The 2yo runners are usually split nearly evenly between owner breds and runners bought at the sales. The sales purchases are usually relatively expensive purchases between 30k and 100k gns.
  • His strategy is the standard one for trainers with his type of string that are not targetting 2yo racing. He aims to win a maiden in the first 2-3 runs and then step the best runner up to better class races. The others are retired and wait for their 3yo season. Only one of 13 2yos ran after 3TO in 2004.
  • He does not target FTO wins and only the very best runners tend to win FTO. The best debut in 2004 was by Dash To The Top who finished second (after getting too far behind) and she was good enough to place in a Group 1 race later in the season. The majority of debuts are around 14lbs below their best rating on debut.
  • FTO SP is not well correlated with FTO performance nor ability. In 2003-4 five of his debuts were at less than 10/1 but only one reached a place.
  • STO runs are usually within 9-20 days and most show a small improvement between 2-9lbs.
  • He sometimes runs a 2yo in Italy (usually at San Siro) on debut before it runs in Britain from STO onwards.
  • In 2004 he only had no runner in a nursery. This was different from previous seasons when he usually had at least one winner of a nursery. Also, the 'nursery types' often made debuts below the average level for the stable and were brought along slightly more slowly than those targetted at maiden wins.
