2002 - 2004 Statistics
J. L. Spearing (Kinnersley, Worcs)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Medium sized, dual purpose stable. Targets 2yo racing at a low level with around 8 runners each season and one or two winners.
  • Most 2yos run to around 3TO but 2yo types and winners may run to 10TO. The stable gets a reasonable strike rate around 9.5% with this approach.
  • Most of the 2yos are bought relatively cheaply for between 2k to 8k gns with the majority at the lower end of the range.
  • It is fascinating to consider the records of the single winner in each season 2001 to 2004 which made its debut for the stable (he had one winner in 2003 which made debut for J. Eustace). The table summarises :-
  • Name Debut run Subsequent runs
    E C Lady Apr 4th, Southwell 4th/9 at 16/1 rated 34
    [Earliest stable runner]
Won Seller 3TO rated 56, developed to win consecutive nurseries rated OR67 and 74 in August and final rating OR86.
Cashel Mead May 7th, Windsor 4th/10 at 16/1 rated 54
    [Second earliest stable runner.]
Won auction STO rating 70, developed in later season when soft ground returned to win two races in October including a nursery off OR82.

[Earliest stable debut in 2002 was good third at 25/1 on May 6th]

Borzoi Maestro April 7th, Windsor 5th/9 at 20/1 rated 57.
    [Earliest stable runner]
Ran in AW sellers rating 50s then 60s for 6TO AW seller win on Jul 11th. Then won next two races in nurseries off OR65 and OR72 and then struggled in races of OR84
Island Swing May 17th,  Windsor 15th/19 at 50/1 rating 25.
    [Earliest stable runner]
Won Seller STO rating 50 then the York Rous Seller 3TO rating 70+. Struggled in Nurseries off OR82 before later season win and final rating OR85.

  • The table tells its own story and Island Swing was one of the bets of the season in 2004 in the York race, you just knew that you could trust this trainer to find 10lbs+ improvement once the runner had broken its maiden.
  • There are two other interesting points to consider with the table. Firstly is this planned before the season starts with these winners? The early debuts and similar paths and final ratings suggest so but three of the runners could have been lost from the stable in the early selling races.
  • The second point is what training and conditioning is the trainer doing to get the development to rating around 80 after many runs? For example and see the pictures, Cashel Mead was a good physical type and rating 80+ is not a surprise. But to get Borzoi Maestro rated OR84 is very hard to credit, he's very small and on Paddock Review the AW sellers he started in were his mark.
  • Overall FTO runs are at long SPs and moderate runners and later season debuts tend to be closer to final rating FTO.
