Entered for
Redcar 5f Maiden |
Poor price for sales. Reviewed at sales and body and build was better than
the sales price including ok muscle for size. The problem was possibly
his movement which was rangy but weak and not properly controlled behind.
Noted that he could rate into 60s if movement improved.
By sire with moderate record but capable of getting early 5f winners (e.g.
Spanish Ace in 2003).
Dam had moderate pedigree but was earlyish 5f winner and beat 3 later Listed
winners in her maiden but did not progress (trained P. Howling). [B2yoR
backed her at 16/1 to win the Supersprint but that was a 'long' time ago]
Trainer has good record with 2yos given the sales prices. 2yos are assessed
at home before they run. Most 2yos develop from debut to reach best on
3TO. However, the earliest debuts each season tend to be competitive and
a shorter SP is significant.
Trainer ran moderate type in this race last year after they had won the
Brocklesby with a better type. They have already run an identified 2yo
in the first Conditions race of the season and presumably this one is inferior.
In summary a moderate pedigree and poor sales price. Has profile to scrape
into the 60s in the season if things go very well but could be limited.
Likely to be competent on debut. Profile [54]

Comments for Redcar race are valid. Receives 5lb from topweight colt in

March 29th:
Yarmouth 5.2f - POST RACE |
Drifted from 7/1 which is a bad sign for his trainer on debut who tend
to know the ability of their runners prior to a race. 3 lengths plus behind
pacemakers at halfway and just plugged on as they stalled and faded to
moderate 4th. Estimate [48]

April 6th: Declared for
Nottingham 5f Maiden |
Moderate debut run and not promising great improvement. Trainer tends to
bring this type along for a targeted 3TO win attempt in a lower class race.
Should not be competitive in what looks a good maiden on overall profile.

April 6th: Nottingham
Post Race |
Was 4/1 third favourite from 7/2. Ran off the pace and produced a one-paced
staying performance in very soft ground and probably not needing to show
much improvement from debut to win. Race run in a very slow time, three
seconds slower than any 5f race at the course in the period 2002-4 (mostly
on better ground). Estimate [57]

April 9th: Declared for
Newcastle 5f Novice |
Runs only three days after win and penalised 7lbs. Produced a staying performance
in a slow time to win. On soft ground on this uphill course the race may
develop into a similar 'slog' but vulnerable to anything with more natural
pace, especially if the leaders don't set too fast a pace. Profile
[62 - 7 = 55]

April 30th: Thirsk
5f Novice |
Ran to expectations in another slow race at Newcastle on testing ground.
Beaten by a newcomer receiving with. Estimate [61]
Has not shown 5f speed and has looked a 5f 'stayer' in soft ground 5f races
to date. The form of his win at Nottingham has worked out poorly. Likely
to find this flat 5f a disadvantage against better types and gives weight
to other runners. Profile [64]
