April 30th: Goodwood
5f Maiden |
Owner bred and the dam and previous foal were both trained by M Channon.
Sire has reasonable record with 2yos although signs of it slightly declining
after a very good start. Can produce early 5f winners but as a general
rule they tend to develop and win from May onwards. However, he has had
two minor 5f winner so far in 2005.
The dam has a mixed pedigree and ran in Listed and Group races before she
won a maiden on 4TO having finished second on debut. She has produced on
previous 2yo filly with the same trainer. She also finished second debut
and ran in Group races later despite a mid 80s rating at best.
The trainer does not target strong debuts and FTO wins tend to come along
with the best types and the occasional 'accident' in poor races. However,
he tends to target better debuts for some owners and with some owner breds
- consider the record with the fillies in this family as an example.
The trainer ran 11 2yos on debut at Goodwood in 2004 ranging from a seller
types though to Group placed Henrik. Of the 11 only one won and three placed.
The shorter SPs (8/1 or less) were mostly the better debuts.
In summary a good pedigree to produce an 80+ sprint 2yo and likely to be
readier than the trainer's average debut runner. The SP is likely to be
a reasonable indicator of expected performance. Profile [65]

Post Race |
Drifted from 7/4f to 5/2jf as Storm On The Run received some support. He
looked an ok size with a solid build and some length. Needed to tighten
up and not hard fit. He was loaded last but immediately panicked and started
kicking out and the jockey stood on the side bar. A handler got up to hold
him and the jockey got back on.
He was leant or wedged against the stalls with his back legs splayed as
the starter opened the gates quickly after the jockey got back on. Unsurprisingly
he made a slow and awkward start and had to be driven early to pick up.
He was always off the back in 6th and eased late on. Performed below expectations
but with an obvious excuse. Estimate [0]

Gave problems at the stalls on debut and never got into that race. Assuming
that problem is mostly resolved here he should probably be able to run
to the original rating. Profile [65]

May 30th: Sandown
5f Listed |
A little support as 13/2 3rd favourite at Salisbury. Race run on firm ground
and with a strong tailwind and produced an All-age course record. Broke
well and held up to settle third behind two front runners who picked the
pace up notably after an average first furlong. Travelled well just over
a length off the pace at halfway with the debut runners already adrift.
Moved up comfortably as the leaders stalled around 1f out and lengthened
away at the finish not looking hard pressed. Estimate [83]
A good performance STO and looks to have better ability than the trainer's
previous runners in the race (looks a similar physical type to Moscow Music
by the same sire who was second in the race 2004). Can improve further
so long as he shows the restraint and professionalism he had at Salisbury.
Estimate [92 - 2 = 90]

Post Race |
Paddock review rated 84. Above medium size and heavy build. Similar type
to Northern Empire but a less strong in front and with a longer, slightly
weaker neck although probably more powerful behind. Sire typical. Slightly
mentally immature. Ought to be able to rate 90+.
Broke a little slowly and raced 6+ wide off he rail in a race where those
closer to the rail seemed to have an advantage. In 9th more than 2L off
the leader after a furlong. Some progress to midfield 2L off the leader
at halfway. The first three pressed on from there but he showed no response
and faded and the jockey did not persist.
A flat run and below his best (he beat the 3rd here comfortably on LTO).
No obvious excuse and although a little mentally immature his behaviour
was no obvious problem before the race. Estimate [49]

5f Group 3 |
Trainer persists with him in a high level race but has also done the same
with the dam (rain in the Chesham and the Cherry Hinton) and the previous
2yo from her. Looked capable of better on physical set up and a number
of runners ran poorly. Back on a flat, fast track. Profile [90]
