April 27th: Pontefract
5f Maiden |
Made solid price at the more select Tattersalls sales.
By good sire that has a solid (if unexciting) record with 2yos. 5f winners
are rare and normally need help from the dam and the trainer's methods.
Dam was a useful 5f winner at 2yo in France and won a Listed race at 7f.
She does not have a full 'speed' pedigree. This is her first foal.
Trainer used to identify his early season 2yos and often run up winning
sequences with them including on debut. Possibly because of lack of quality
that hasn't been the case 2002-4. However the earliest debut runners in
each season have usually been competitive at low level but needing a debut
run to show peak form STO after a short break.
Trainer has had four debuts in 2005, and the only competitive one was a
good type who was a strong second at Newmarket. Better runners tend to
debut at at Newmarket, Newbury, York, etc.
In summary an ok pedigree for 5f but probably better at 6f and not inconvenienced
by the stiff 5f here. Trainer has not had his debut runners ready to compete
for the most part in the last two seasons. Profile [54]

May 11th: York
5f Novice |
Non-runner at Pontefract and now chosen as the trainer's representative
at a course where he tends to introduce better types if he has them. The
trainer won the 5f maiden at the meeting in 2004 (not run this year) but
his better debut 2yos here tend to place at prices in the 5/1 to 10/1 range.
The trainer has run six 2yos so far and five have made poor debuts although
most have been poor types and/or not fit enough. The one better debut has
been the usual 'place at around 8/1' at one of his usual courses for introducing
better types - Newmarket.
Increase profile for slightly later debut and at better course and receives
up to 7lb from the previous winners. Profile [72]

May 28th: Goodwood
6f Auction |
Backed from 8/1 to 6/1 on debut at York and one of a number of trainer
runners supported in that period (but results moderate). Race run on soft
ground with a good pace. Looked inexperienced and possibly not used to
the ground conditions. Losing ground and driven by the jockey in the first
furlong. More than 5L off the pace and halfway and still driven along.
Made ground in the last furlong as the pacemakers stalled and plugging
on but never in the race. Estimate [60]
Steps up to 6f after looking to lack pace on debut. Trainer's STO runs
have mostly shown reasonable improvement in 2005. Topweight in this Auction
and gives between 1-12lbs. Profile [74]

June 4th: Doncaster
6f Auction |
11/4 at Goodwood in a race with a good pace where the winner came from
well off the pace. Close up to past halfway but under pressure soon afterwards
and faded notably from 2f out and slightly eased. Estimate [30]
Trainer had another STO runner fail on the same day as this one.
Firmer ground might have been part of the problem at Goodwood but cracked
early anywya. Profile [60]
