April 23rd: Leicester
5f Maiden |
Made an acceptable price at the Tattersalls part 2 sales.
By repatriated sire who has a moderate record with 2yos overall but ok
for 5-6f minor winners. He has a solid start to 2005 with two minor
5f winners already.
Dam had an acceptable sprint 2yo pedigree but showed no form in several
runs. This is her first foal.
Trainer has settled into his normal pattern of debut runners being competent
and able to place on debut in suitable races without winning unless targeted
debuts for specific owners.
The trainer had runners in the race in 2002-3 and both were on STO runs
and beaten (one at 1/2fav). The 2003 runner was a similar type by the same
sire who won at claiming level later rating around 70 at best.
In summary an acceptable although uninspiring pedigree and an ok sales
price given the dam's racing record. Likely to be competitive at 65-72
level later but not ready to run to that level here. Profile [56]

Post Race |
An unremarkable type overall, slightly small but with some length. Strong
quartered overall although slightly lighter build behind. Showed a notable
mature and competitive attitude. In summary a neat type, lacking scope
and slightly limited by his size but makes the most of what he is because
of his maturity and solid reach. Probably can get to around 70 rating in
early season but unlikely to develop further.
Drifted from 12/1 to 16/1 on debut and no vibes that he was expected to
compete strongly. Looked a neat, mature, competitive and early type but
slightly limited by his size. Sat close to the pace and finished the race
off best of those near the pacemakers. Inclined to the view that this was
an 'accidental' debut win for the trainer in a race that was weaker than
it looked. May struggle under the penalties he will have to carry.

May 2nd: Curragh 5f
May 21st: Curragh 5f |
May 2nd won a 6 runner race at the Curragh on Heavy ground in a slow time.
The favourite for the race was Where's That Tiger who has run unplaced
in a Listed race at Goodwood since.
May 21st finished second in the Listed 'Marble Hill' stakes beaten by the
filly who was his runner-up on May 2nd. She reportedly will be targeted
at Royal Ascot.

June 4th: Epsom
6f Listed |
Penalised for the Curragh with and gives 2lb+ to the other runners. Trainer
has run a variety of types in the race in the last three years with the
best finish being a 2nd place with Cedarberg (who had also run in Ireland
placed in a maiden when accompanying the owner's Holborn).
Difficult to place and the Leicester form is just ordinary with the 2nd-4th
beaten a number of times since. [What does 'Irish 2yo Racing' say about
the Marble Hill form?] Profile [84 - 2 = 82]

6f Group 2 |
4/1jf at Epsom and handled the course well. Broke first from a goo low
draw and settled well in 2nd just off the lead after 1f. Allowed leader
to cross him over to the rail and tracked him travelling well at halfway.
Went clear comfortably and drew 6L clear of the fading King Malachi who
finished 2nd. Similar size to King Malachi but heavier and more length.
Estimate [100]
Time at Epsom was above average but not startling. Some hint that he won
as comfortably as he did because he handled the course so much better than
the others. Trainer in interview was not particularly bullish - "Nice little
horse, always a professional and knew he was handy enough to operate on
the track". Trainer runs two here with C Catlin again riding and T Durcan
on Zato.
A difficult type to assess physically and has already performed above expectations.
Gives the impression of being a precocious and professional 2yo and is
relatively further developed by mid season. He probably has limited development
and ought to be vulnerable against the best of the long term prospects.
