May 5th: Folkestone
5f Maiden |
Made middling price at Tattersalls Ireland sales.
First season sire made 6f May debut at 2yo and superior 6-7f runner. Made
solid impression at the sales and yearlings sold well.
B2yoR rated 32 of his yearlings and they were a solid group if lacking
real stars.
Sire has had 13 runners already with two wins, one on debut in a moderate
race at Edinburgh. 4 other runners have placed on debut at moderate levels.
The dam was cheaply bought with a sprint 2yo pedigree and trained by P
Chapple-Hyam. She won a minor maiden and then ran in Group races managing
to sneak a third place in the Nell Gwyn presumably when very ready in early
season. Her four previous foals have shown moderate form or worse on the
flat and have managed just two runs as 2yos.
Trainer made quick start to 2004 and had two winners by early April. His
usual strategy before that had been to use debut runs to develop from and
look to win STO. He seems to have returned to that method in 2005 and has
had four 2yos run so far and all have made poor to moderate debuts. He
has another debut runner at Chester yesterday.
The trainer runs two here and has done the same in a previous Folkestone
race in 2005.
In summary the early debut is a good sign given the dam's previous foals.
Likely to need this debut run to develop from on trainer's record in 2005
so far. Penalised 4lb for sales price. Profile [57 - 4 = 53]

5f Conditions |
10/1 on debut at Folkestone. Slightly inexperienced overall and got behind
early in a race with a good pace. Made progress after halfway and kept
on quite well in the last furlong. Estimate [61]
A moderate level of form on debut but above his trainer's average. Trainer
targets STO peaks and does not usually overtry his horses (and not his
maidens). Profile [71 + 3 = 74]

Post Race |
Paddock review rating 79. Biggest in the group and above average build.
A likeable type and with good scope to continue his physical development.
Slightly leggy and a little narrow and needs to strengthen up to carry
his size. A little mentally immature and wearing a cross noseband. Good,
loose and rangy mover.
Better for 6f and with physical development. Ought to be able to rate over
85 and has the potential to be useful+.
8/1 fourth favourite. Broke well and led on the rail after a furlong setting
an average pace until the race quickened inside 2f out. Showed less change-of-pace
than Green Park & Classic Encounter (who are smaller, readier 2yos)
and hampered by Classic Encounter who hung across him after getting around
3/4L in front of him as the pace picked up. Lost a little ground but kept
on. Probably needs 6f and a little time to develop his strength and mental
maturity. Good potential. Estimate [67]

5f Listed |
Looked capable of developing to this level of race in time but probably
over 6f. The form of his debut race was low because of the slowish pace
and he showed just acceptable change of pace as the race quickened. Remains
a good prospect but gives the impression that a fast 5f here against specialist
5f 2yos not his ideal.
Trainer runs three (surprisingly) and this the likely first string.
