5f Maiden |
Made good price at Doncaster St Leger sales. His sire had a notable 2004,
including with 2yos, and his yearlings sold very well in 2004.
Reviewed at the sales and an acceptable size with heavy build. A short
walker behind but this could improve. Had the scope to develop but ought
to be capable of showing 75 form.
Good sire tends to get 2yos that are physically very similar although often
slightly small, compact, heavy & strong build and not particularly
taking (You're spared the Somnus at Ripon tale for the moment). Refer to
picture of Pivotal.
Sire had a remarkably good 2004 both for number of winners and quality
and possibly reflecting the better mares he got after his good start at
stud. He has a good record in getting 5f winners although better from May
onwards.
Dam has a relatively stout French pedigree and showed moderate form.
Trainer does not target strong debuts and FTO winners tend to be his best
types. He seems to have targeted the Newmarket Craven meeting (last week)
to introduce his most natural 2yos and debuts at this course (including
in this race) are normally more typical 'development' runs.
In summary the pedigree of at least an average sprint maiden winner and
the sire can often surprise. The sire will have to provide the 5f zip but
has proved capable of that although perhaps not this early in season. Unless
useful+ unlikely to be competitive to win on debut and trainer probably
happy with a promising debut. Profile [54]

Post Race |
Paddock reviewed at Windsor and rated 79. Only medium sized in the group
but with above average build. Fairly typical strong 'Pivotal' type and
notably strong and mature in front. Ought to be 80+ rated sprinter.
100/30 favourite on debut with L. Dettori riding. An interesting example
of how a 'whisper' horse can end up favourite even when there are a range
of negative factors. To repeat the main point, only the very best (95+
raters) 2yos win first time out for this trainer especially in early season.
So the 'whisper' must have said he was Group class? Unlikely, but with
nothing else in the field fancied the whisper seemed to have gained it's
own momentum and hence he was favourite.
Another negative as it turned out was that he was drawn low and went on
a tour of the course to centre-far side and back. He wouldn't have won
but he may have placed without this. The point being that this was a perfectly
good debut by a 2yo for the trainer and promising 80+ performances later.
However, it didn't promise 'Group class'. For example a Group class runner
that did win for the trainer FTO in earlier season like Cape Fear would
have won here even with a detour around the course. Estimate [58]
