April 13th: Declared for
Beverley 5f Auction |
Sold for solid price at Doncaster St Leger sales, above his sire's average.
Reviewed at the sales and rated 73 with an above average chance of being
a competitive 2yo in early to mid-season. He had good size and build and
looked a readier type than many by his sire. He was seen as being capable
of rating in the 70s.
By second season sire who had 5 moderate to average winners in first season,
only one at 5f although two early runners showed 60s form over 5f.
Dam was useful 6f 2yo but has produced poor quality with her previous foals
including a full sister that sold less well.
Trainer had moderate start with first full season of 2yos in 2004 and hints
that he hadn't yet developed a sure touch with debuts, including in early
season.
He has run five 2yos in 2005, three in sellers and two in minor AW races,
all with a 7lb apprentice riding. Four have finished last without achieving
a rating & the other beat one other runner.
While one of those was small and limited the others cost €16k and
then, 8k, 5k & 3k gns so further evidence that the trainer may not
have a sure touch with debuts.
In summary a likeable type at the sales and ought to be a 70s rated type
over 6f. Probably need 6f but ought to show ability on debut on this stiff
5f. However, the trainer is a real negative at present. The issues over
2yo training are still there on the evidence of the hopeless debut runs
so far. You would be much more confident if someone like D Barron was the
trainer but would expect him to show some of the ability he looked to have
at the sales (even for this trainer with the 7lb apprentice riding).
Penalised 4lb for his sales price. Profile [55 - 4 = 51]

May 7th: Beverley
5f Maiden |
100/1 on debut with a 7lb apprentice. Broke left handed from the stalls
and hung left handed. More than 7 lengths adrift of a solid pace at halfway
and then hung right handed to the rail 2f out. Faded from there.
Estimate [0]
Ran worse than even the low expectations on debut and looked to lack steering
although the apprentice looks a weak rider. The trainer has still not had
a 2yo show worthwhile form in 2005. Track for signs that he has some of
the ability he looked to have at the sales. Well drawn in 12 of 14.

May 27th: Wolverhampton
6f Maiden |
66/1 at Beverley with a 7lb apprentice. Race featured a strong pace on
the rail and three of the four placers finished from well off the pace
up the centre of the course. He showed more life in breaking well from
his good draw and settling 3rd on the rail and tracked the pace by 1 length
at halfway. Made a brief effort at 2f out and still in touch coming towards
the final furlong but faded strongly from there and did worst of the four
pacemakers on the rail. Estimate [20]
Ridden by a strong, senior jockey for the first time here and steps up
to 6f. Trainer's runners have all shown poor to moderate form but have
shown some progression with racing from mostly zero rated debuts (there's
only one way to go). Might have rated higher last time but for chasing
a strong pace on probably sticky ground. Profile [54]
