May 1st: Newmarket
5f Maiden |
Made a high price at the Doncaster St Leger sales. Note that his sire had
a very good year in 2004 and most of his 2yos made good prices.
Rated 74 at the sales with a well above average chance of being a competitive
2yo. He was lengthier than his sire's standard type and a weak mover behind.
The overall rating was lowered because he needed to develop well from the
sales although he had the scope to do so. In that context it is a good
sign that he runs relatively early in the season.
Good sire tends to get 2yos that are physically very similar although often
slightly small, compact, heavy & strong build and not particularly
taking. Refer to picture of Pivotal.
Sire had a remarkably good 2004 both for number of winners and quality
and possibly reflecting the better mares he got after his good start at
stud. He has a good record in getting 5f winners although better from May
onwards.
His dam was bred by the same stud as Pivotal and was a just useful 5f 2yo
who did not improve at 3yo. She has produced a useful 5f 2yo who was taken
to Hamilton to win on debut.
Major trainer does not target FTO wins and they tend to come along with
better types. He has made a slow start to 2005 but has now had four winners
and the recent debuts have been solid. He has had one debut win in a poor
Windsor fillies' race.
Trainer has won the last two runnings of the race with above average 2yos.
In summary a long list of positives and he has a similar profile to the
trainer's previous winners. Probably a better type with more pace than
Lord Links although possibly short of Tizzy May's quality. The trainer's
debuts at Newmarket tend to be a little more ready than his average and
a good sign that this one runs relatively early in the season.
