May 14th: Newbury
6f Maiden |
Retained for a lowish price at the Tattersalls part 2 sales.
Repatriated sire has not had any recent 2yo runners in Britain. He is best
known for winning the Derby but he was a 5f winner at 2yo on his May 2nd
debut.
Dam was a 75 rated 2yo over 7f for the trainer and has produced a similar
type (over 5-6f).
Trainer used to identify his early season 2yos and often run up winning
sequences with them including on debut. Possibly because of lack of quality
that hasn't been the case 2002-4. However the earliest debut runners in
each season have usually been competitive at low level but needing a debut
run to show peak form STO after a short break.
He has had 6 debuts in 2005 and the five that ran at 'lesser' courses have
been very poor. The one solid debut was a second place in a maiden at this
course. He typically runs his better types at the major courses on debut
(here, York, etc.). The better types can place in these tougher maidens
but rarely win nowadays.
He has had two moderate to poor debuts at York this week.
In summary unlikely to be a better type and not competitive with the stronger
runners here. Profile [59]

June 7th: Salisbury
6f Auction |
33/1 on debut at Newbury in a race run on notably firm ground. Favourite
in the race failed and it was run in a slower time than t he second division.
More than 3L off the lead at an average pace at halfway. Made progress
in centre course to challenge as the leaders faded. Duelled to to finish.
Estimate
[61]
The form of the maiden he ran in is a little suspect. The third has run
since and finished 3rd in a similar auction race to this one (although
ran a little better than the finishing position and did best of the pace).
The 6th (40/1 with a 7lb apprentice) has placed in a Wolverhampton maiden.
Trainer's STO runner shave mostly shown reasonable improvement although
two have failed. Estimate [68 + 4 = 72]

June 14th: York
7f Listed |
8/11f at Salisbury and a likeable performance. Tracked a good pace in second
and aneck off the lead after 1f and at halfway starting from a good draw
near the rail. Made an effort 2f out and went 2L clear. Kept on well and
not hard pressed. Estimate [74]
Trainer quoted that he thought he had been cheap as the sales because he
was big and by an unfashionable sire. He hasn't grown since the sales and
a professional. Profile [88 + 2 = 90]
