Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 14th: Ripon
5f Maiden
  • Sold for good price at Doncaster St Leger sales. Much higher price than the other UK raced produce of the dam.
  • By third season sire who made a good start in 2002 with 2yos including early 5f winners. 2003 a poor follow up season (not unusual for new sire's records to falter in second and third seasons). He has had one moderate runner so far in 2005 for the same trainer.
  • Dam was well related and showed superior form over 7-8f after not racing at 2yo. She has produced winners rating around 80 at 7-8f at best including a full sister that cost only €15k (see picture via the pedigree box below. B Hills said she was his bargain sales buy in 2003).
  • Trainer normally has his runners competent and ready to compete on debut - particularly from May onwards. His earliest debuts can be more variable and in 2002-4 many have not developed nor won. In 2005 he has run two 2yos and neither has competed strongly on debut. One of these runners ran poorly STO yesterday.
  • In summary a good pedigree to be a 6f+ winner around 80 and the sales price suggests a good physical type. Trainer's record with his debuts up to the end on April is less good than from May onwards. 2005 has followed that pattern so far. So will this one be a 'ready natural' that can compete to win on debut. Trainer's record and the dams previous foals suggest he'll need a bit more time.  Profile [60]
  • May 12th: York
    6f Maiden
  • 10/1 on soft ground at Ripon in a race where only the winner handled the ground. Got behind and more than 5 lengths off the pace at halfway. Just plugged on to 4th without ever getting into the race and unable to go with the early pace. Estimate [42]
  • The race he made his debut in was hard to assess with a six length winner and moderate runs otherwise. The subsequent runs of the first and second have been uncompetitive and the race is probably slightly over-rated.
  • The trainer's early runs have been typically 'ordinary' so far with only one moderate third place. In 2002-4 it has taken until July for the main 2yos wins to begin. Improvement but from a low base.  Profile [58]
  • June 29th: Catterick
    7f Maiden
  • 16/1 at York ridden by a 3lb apprentice. Soft ground. Broke well and fourth place within a length of the main group leader after 1f, dropped back to 6th and more than 2L off the lead at halfway. Outpaced as the better types went on 2f out and faded with the main group. Estimate [51]
  • Given a 46 day break and steps up to 6f after two uncompetitive runs. The form of his second run has proved to be moderate. The trainer has had some better recent 2yo debuts but has still only had 2 minor winners, one on debut.
  • Has the profile of the type of trainer 2yo which is proving disappointing and going up in distance partly for negative reasons.  Estimate [58]
