June 16th: Newbury
6f Maiden c&g |
Made a good price at the Doncaster St Leger sales and a rare purchse there
by Hamdan Al Maktoum's agent.
Sire has a very good record with 2yos and ok for producing 6f and precocious
runners. He has already had 4 winners in 2005 over 5-6f.
Dam has a fast ground, sprint pedigree but showed only modest form over
8f at 3yo. She has produced one moderate full brother. The other two foals
include an above average sprint 2yo and a moderate one.
5th debut for the trainer after starting running his 2yos last week.
Overall strategy is to win a maiden in the first 3 runs and then step better
runners up to Conditions races or higher.
He is quoted as saying all 2yo work is done as relative gallops between
matched pairs/threesomes and no timing is done. This means that until he
has seen how the initial debuts run he does not have a full understanding
of ability of 2yos. This also matches the fact that his winners make debuts
throughout season, i.e. he has not identified best runners by June and
runs those first.
He does not target FTO wins and the ones he get are usually with superior
runners and occasionally with average types in weak races. His runners
are usually at, or above, average fitness on debut and it is usually their
lack of mental sharpness and the trainer's requirement that they do not
have hard races that limits their FTO performance.
The four debuts to date have all been similar - not competitive to win
but showing some ability but keeing on into the 3rd-6th range after halfway.
Trainer runs two in the race with I Mongan on this one and T Queally on
Light Meter.
In summary a good sprint 2yo pedigree and an unusual purchase for the owner.
Not an obviously good sign he starts at 6f. Trainer's debuts so far have
been solid but not competitive and his overall FTO record is poor.
