June 18th: Newmarket
7f Maiden |
Made a good price at the Tattersalls Part 1 sales.
Reviewed at the sales and rated 70 with a just above average chance of
being a 2yo winner. Average size but very heavily built and deep through
the body. Short and a little weak behind. Lacked quality but a stong type.
Difficult to rate and could be better than his workmanlike looks.
First 2yo runner for a first season sire that did not race at 2yo and is
by a non precocious sire himself.
Made a solid impression at the sales. B2yoR rated 15 of the yearlings and
they were a variable group but with the better types tending to make good
prices. He has had three poor runenrs so far.
Dam showed 70ish rated placed form over 6-7f at 2yo but here better offspring
have required 8f+ to show useful form.
7th debut for the trainer after starting running his 2yos last week. Overall
strategy is to win a maiden in the first 3 runs and then step better runners
up to Conditions races or higher. He does not target FTO wins and the ones
he get are usually with superior runners and occasionally with average
types in weak races. His runners are usually at, or above, average fitness
on debut and it is usually their lack of mental sharpness and the trainer's
requirement that they do not have hard races that limits their FTO performance.
The first four debuts to date have all been similar - not competitive to
win but showing some ability but keeing on into the 3rd-6th range after
halfway. Two days ago he introduced a 2yo for the same owner bought
at the sales for 50k gns and with an all '2yo' pedigree. He looked small
but carried the first colours and won a probably moderate maiden with a
later run. Yesterday he had a more normal midfield debut here for the owner.
Trainer introduced an 85 rater in the race in 2004. The race clashes with
the Royal Meeting and N Mackay (who rode the debut winner at Newbury) rides
for the owner.
In summary a solid but not obviously superior pedigree and not a surprise
he starts at 7f. Overall the trainer gets rare FTO wins and this one unlikely
to be precocious enough. Profile [67]
