March 31st : Declared
5f Conditions - Brocklesby
at Doncaster |
Retained for acceptable price at TO2 sales.
By a first season sire with a mixed pedigree that showed 2yo form over
6f. Sire made a moderate impression with yearlings and many were small
although often with better builds.
Sire has had one poor runner so far for the same trainer and owner/breeder.
Dam raced for same connections and needed 10f at 3yo to win. She has produce
two 70s rated 2yos that sold for higher prices than this one.
Trainer has a long career working with cheap and early 2yos. Until 2002
he usually had runners very fit and ready on debut and most stable wins
were by the end of April. Evidence suggests he has changed that approach
a little and debut runners are not quite so 'wound up'. It's also possible
he has lacked a quality runner in 2003-4.
He has had a poor start to 2005 with seven runners of which none have reached
a place on debut, even in weak races. He normally chooses about his 'best'
2yo for this race but being better than those that have already run would
not be hard.
In summary a mixed pedigree and the sire not an obvious positive. Sales
price suggests may not be a 70+ type. Trainer seems to have changed debut
run readiness and/or possibly does not have his runners as forward in 2005.
Likely to be at a shorter SP than he should be because of his trainer's
earlier reputation. Inclined to take a 'downside' view of his chances.

Ran as expected in 5th at 20/1. The price suggesting the trainer did not
think he was above average although he usually runs his best (or close
to) 2yo in this race.
The SP probably also reflected the poor start to the season by the trainer
and the fact that people are realising he hasn't had his 2yos 'wound up'
on debut for some time.
The first 6 or so home in this race can usually win and early season maiden
rating at least around 65-70 and he did enough to suggest that is likely
without promising anything better. Estimate [55]

April 13th: Declared for
Beverley 5f Auction |
Trainer is now in better form and has had a minor winner and a better type
who ran well in a Conditions race after a debut win.
A fifth place in the Brocklesby on debut would normally mean that the runner
had enough ability to win this type of race STO. Slight worry over the
strength of the Brocklesby form in 2005 with the 6th, 7th and 8th all beaten
next time in weaker races.
Has 5lb apprentice and is penalised 2lb for his sales price. Has a reasonable
draw in 7 assuming he can get into the race early here. Profile
