Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
May 1st: Newmarket
5f Maiden
  • Made low to middling price at Doncaster St Leger sales but still well above the price for the dam's previous yearlings.
  • Rated 73 at the sales with an above average chance of being competitive as a 2yo. He was medium sized with a heavyish build while being deeper and less lengthy than typical for the sire. He seemed well bought at only 12k gns.
  • Sire has good record with 2yos and regularly gets precocious 5f winners.
  • Dam had a minor sprint 2yo pedigree but was unraced. SHe has produce two poor to moderate 2yos.
  • Trainer had increase in 2yos in 2004 and best runner was competitive on debut in mid-April. With less 2yos and quality in previous season debuts usually poor. SP on debut has not been an indicator of better ability.
  • Trainer has had two debuts in 2005 by more expensive yearlings that were uncompetitive. Interesting to note that the trainer has only had one debut at the course in 2002-4 (most are at northern courses). That runner - Glaramara - was unplaced but won STO and was rated 90 at 2yo.
  • In summary a moderate pedigree but sales review suggested that he was at the top end of what that pedigree could produce. He ought to be able to rate 70+ in the season but the trainer's other debuts have been poor in 2005 so hard to expect a strong showing on debut. However, one to track for promise.  Profile [58]
  • May 1st: Newmarket
    Post Race
  • 50/1 and made a solid debut in finishing 6th on the wrong side of a 5 length gap from the first 5 who all looked at least useful. An acceptable debut by trainer's standards and held up in rear and kept on to do best of the second rank.  Estimate [49]
  • May 4th: Chester
    5f Maiden
  • Never competitive but made an acceptable debut. A surprise to see him run only 3 days later at a course where the trainer & owner like to have runners. Had looked to good prospects of rating 70+ in the season at the sales but hard to know what the point of the two close runs is.
  • Moderately drawn in 9 but should be able to get a reasonable position with a number of newcomers inside him. The trainer runs two and this probably the first string.  Profile [61]
  • May 4th: Chester
    Post Race
  • 14/1 to 16/1 5th favourite. Ran only 3 days after a quiet Newmarket debut where they looked to be trying to teach him to settle. Which seems odd given the mayhem here. Given a very aggressive ride and broke first from stall 9 and set a strong pace to lead at the end of the first furlong with the field spread over 10 lengths and more. Continued to be driven to press on with the pace and the first three were 5 lengths clear at halfway and less than half the field within 7 lengths. Started to stall from 1.5 furlong out and had 'gone' entirely by the start of the last furlong and coasted home.
  • On the plus side it was good to see he has some pace and had the moderate types outpaced but what was the point? Can do better with development but interesting to see what effect this run has. Estimate [29]
  • June 1st: Beverley
    5f Conditions
  • Trainer's strategy in developing 2yos careers both in terms of race types and timing can be puzzling. Returns after a break after two runs in 4 days where the first was a perfectly solid FTO effort with a little promise. Given no chance to show any improvement with a too aggressive ride at Chester next time.
  • Has managed to find a weak edition of this race and improvement to close to his best rating level range would make him competitive.  Profile [73]
  • June 16th: York
    5f Group 3
  • 7/1 at Beverley in a moderate edition of the race run on rain softened ground. Set a strong pace on the rail and 1L clear at halfway. The pace saw Soto (fav) and Lord Jack Flash stalling before the final furlong and the outpaced newcomers plugging on past them. He did relatively well to keep on from that pace to win. A slow time and much slower than the earlier Hilary Needler.  Estimate [69]
  • Can improve further for a more even run style but not up to the standard of the best types.  Estimate [78]
