June 17th: Newmarket
6f Maiden |
Owner bred by Hamdan Al Maktoum.
Exceptional sire is now deceased. Has a good record with 2yos but runners
tend to develop with time. He has not had a 2yo winner before June in Britain
2002-4.
Gets occasional 5f wins but more quality and better record at 6f+. He has
had seven runners in Britain in 2005. One has won over 6f and three
have placed on their debuts, two over 5f.
Dam a 5f Listed winner at 2yo has produced a Group 1 winning 2yo with her
first foal but only one 3yo maiden winner since.
6th debut for the trainer after starting running his 2yos last week. Overall
strategy is to win a maiden in the first 3 runs and then step better runners
up to Conditions races or higher. He does not target FTO wins and the ones
he get are usually with superior runners and occasionally with average
types in weak races. His runners are usually at, or above, average fitness
on debut and it is usually their lack of mental sharpness and the trainer's
requirement that they do not have hard races that limits their FTO performance.
The first four debuts to date have all been similar - not competitive to
win but showing some ability but keeing on into the 3rd-6th range after
halfway. Yesterday he introduced a 2yo for the same owner bought
at the sales for only 50k gns and with an all '2yo' pedigree. He looked
small but carried the first colours and won a probably moderate maiden
with a later run.
In summary a very good pedigree which could produce any level of runner.
Trainer does not tend to run only the best types in the first batch so
paddock review needed to asses him. The FTO win yesterday didn't suggest
the trainer had changed his preference for educational debuts.
