April 14th: Newmarket
5f M (C&G) |
Sold for solid price at the expensive Tattersalls yearling sales.
Was reviewed at the sales and rated 69 with an average chance of being
a competitive 2yo. He was small and heavily built and a slight surprise
to see him run so early. He should be able to be a 70s rated sprint winner
and had some scope to develop through the season.
Good sire (possibly imported to UK?) has good record with UK raced 2yos.
Gets winners at all distances although only occasionally at 5f. Wins tend
to start from May onwards but worth noting that most of his previous 2yos
have been with 'bigger' stables (the Dunlops, Stoute etc.) who don't start
with 2yos until later in the season.
Dam was a precocious and useful sprint 2yo in the early days when her sire
was vaguely 'fashionable'. She has produced on unraced 2yo.
Good trainer that supports 2yo racing. His debut runners tend to be competent
and the FTO wins come along with better runners who can win on better ability.
However, he tends to choose his earliest debut runners well and most are
competitive to place and win if they are useful+.
He has had a number of 2yos entered for this meeting but has chosen to
run this one. He has had one previous runner in 2005 who was 4th (first
newcomer to finish) in a mixed quality Brocklesby.
In summary the dam can supply the 5f precociousness and the sire can add
some class. He looked a sprinter at the sales and with some scope to develop.
Trainer has early debut runners competent and they usually compete well
although only the best tend to win. Profile [73]

8/1 and no obvious confidence. Was the second debut of the season for his
trainer and ran a more prominent race but a similar level of performance.
Neither have really looked ready, competitive early 2yos in the mould of
a La Cucaracha for example. This lack of readiness, some inexperience and
the jockey not strongly persisting as he faded led to a below profile run.
Ran close to the pace but soon outpaced as the race quickened 2f out and
seemed to lack some experience. Did not look useful on this effort and
more of an average maiden winner with development. Estimate [54]

April 30th: Goodwood
5f Maiden |
The trainer had a more typical debut winner with a free running type the
day after this one made a moderate debut. The form he showed on debut received
a knock when Twilight Avenger who ran a similar race was 25/1 and well
beaten in a moderate Bath race this week.
In summary he looked an average maiden winner at the sales but with a little
scope. Did not show any natural zip at Newmarket and disappointing. Expect
a better run here but not promising 70+ on this fast course. Profile

Post Race |
Steady at 6/1 after a slightly inexperienced and uncompetitive debut showing
a moderate level of form. A general point to note is that other than Don't
Tell Sue the trainer's 2yos have needed the debut run to develop from in
2005. This was his first STO runner of the season and a good improvement.
He had run a little freely on debut and showed the same tendency here and
the jockey held him up and settled him in 5th behind the solid pace. The
jockey was happy to let Storm On The Run cross in front of him from the
rails to the outside before halfway to further 'anchor' him.
Travelled well after halfway after responding to pressure around 2f out
and the jockey manoeuvred him to the outside to track Storm On The Run.
Quickened with that runner as they went past the stalling pacemakers and
kept on well to make another length on him in the final uphill furlong
and win a comfortably. He can develop further from this to rate 75+. Estimate

5f Novice |
Steps up to 6f which should be suitable on pedigree and on his Goodwood
finishing effort. Penalised 7lb for his win and gives 5lb+ to the others.

6f Group 2 |
11/4 at Newmarket and an impressive performance. In last on the rail after
an average pace for the first furlong. Running freely and got a bump as
Dingaan hung across him sonn afterwards. Swicthed off the rail to 4 wide
and 2L off the leaders at halfway. Made an effort downhill inside 2f out
and showed a good change of pace to quicken clear and keeping on well up
the hill. Estimate [93]
Im pressive performance last time and the trainer has not had a runner
in the race in the last 5 years. Lacks a little size but if he can track
the pace he should show further improvement. Profile [99]
