Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
March 26th: Entered for -
Kempton 5f
Maiden - (D2)
  • Solid price but not high by standards of TO1 sale. Sire gets yearlings that sell for a wide range of prices.
  • Sire has a poor record with 2yos and 2003-4 were moderate for both number of winners and quality. He has never had a British 5f 2yo winner and wins before mid-season are rare.
  • Dam was a useful 8f 2yo and has produced 60s rated 2yo winners, including a later season 5f winner to a more precocious sire than Desert Prince. The minor winners sold less well at the sales.
  • Reviewed at the sales and smallish but heavily built with good depth/width in front although weaker behind and needing to develop. Rated only 60 (B2yoR should declare a bias against the sire).
  • Trainer identifies early 2yo runners although they are not competitive for debut wins unless superior. Had well beaten favourite for first 2yo race of the season.
  • The trainer has run average later winners in this race in 2002-4 and Canton was well beaten as 9/4 fav in this race last year after an inexperienced slow-quick-slow run.
  • The trainer has a number of early 5f debuts each season which aren't suited to it and win over 7f+ later and do well in nurseries (think of Top Spec, Billy Allen in 2003).
  • In summary great doubts about the sire for 5f early and the quality and zip that the dam can add. Unlikely to be professional enough to win on debut unless superior. Physical review at sales suggests he's not superior although his heavy build should allow him to develop. Is he a 'Canton' or a 'Top Spec'?  Profile [56]
  • April 30th: Goodwood
    5f Maiden
  • Did not run at Kempton and has been entered for various races since including the Conditions race at the Newmarket Craven meeting that the trainer won with Cool Creek who also ran in the Kempton race.
  • The trainer has made a slow start but had his first debut winner in a poor race this week. Presume this one has improved in the last month+ since his original entries but still doubtful he's a 5f type.  Profile [64]
