April 15th: Newbury
5.1f Maiden |
Retained for solid price but lowish by the standards of the Tattersalls
part 1 sales (his good quality half brothers had assisted in getting him
into those sales).
Sire has a variable but better than average record with 2yos. He can get
5f winners but runners better for 6f+ usually. Notably he rarely gets early
season winners and better record from mid-season onward.
This trainer has supplied the sire's earliest runner in both 2004-5 with
the 5f placed Bibury Flyer (better at 7f) in 2004 and with debut 5f winner
Flashy Wings in 2005. So the trainer continues his one man campaign to
'bend' the sire's overall record.
Dam had 8f+ pedigree and showed only form over 12f at 3yo. She has produced
good quality runners (and moderate ones) who have sold better than this
one.
The trainer does not target debut wins (except foe certain specific owners)
and has a notable record of getting horses placed on debut without quite
winning.
His earliest debuts in 2005 have been variable but he seems to be settling
down to the usual pattern. Two of the debut wins have been for 'usual suspect'
Jaber Abdullah and other debuts have been mixed.
Trainer's earliest debuts at the course usually compete better on debut
than those later in the season. He has had the winner of the 2yo race on
this card in 2002 and 2004.
In summary a pedigree that will need 6f+ but the trainer has already shown
in 2005 that he will gets wins over 5f with 'pedigrees' other trainers
would not. Not owned by one of the specific group he targets strong debuts
for but trainer now in solid form with 2yos and earliest Newbury debuts
tend to be average winners at least. Profile [67]

5.1f Maiden |
11/4 second favourite and the trainer had been in good form with 2yos at
the Newmarket meeting this week. Broke slightly slow but not a problem
in a race lacking a strong pace. Travelled ok in the race until it quickened
after 2f from home and was the only runner to be caught out and lost ground
and had to be driven.
He kept on in the last furlong and made ground back on the leaders but
probably slightly outpaced in a race that was not a 'speed' 5f test. Ran
roughly to expectations and no problem with being the 70+ winner he looked
at the sales although probably not in a 'speed' 5f. Estimate [62]

5.3f Maiden |
Ran an ok debut at Newbury but got outpaced there before keeping on in
the last furlong. Interesting to see how this course will suit him. The
extended 5f and uphill finish should help him but he could get behind on
the downhill section if there is a good pace (quite likely with a field
this size). Profile [70]

Post Race |
Opened at 6/4f but drifted to 15/8 as a number of others were backed but
then tightened again to 13/8f. Ran the expected race both in terms of rating
and in style. Got outpaced on a flat track FTO and then showed a good finish
and would not have won this race if it had been 5f rather than 5.3f.
On firm going and with a strong, contested pace, he was driven early and
probably 4 lengths off the pacemakers on the downhill stretch. Kept on
well as they stalled and faded and won comfortably and promising better
over 6f+. Estimate [72]

May 13th: Nottingham
6f Novice |
Steps up to 6f from 5.3f and needed all of that to get on top after being
outpaced. Should show further improvement but still vulnerable to a runner
with a change-of-pace on this flat track. Penalised 7lb for his win.

June 14th: York
6f Group 2 |
Quite strong support as 6/4f ridden by a 3lb apprentice. Moderate pace
in the race and 1L off the lead at halfway. Again got a little outpaced
as the race quickened but once he had gathered himself he lengthened well
to take 3L out of Glenmuir and win going away. Estimate [77]
Trainer runs two with T. Durcan on this one and C. Catlin on B A Foxtrot
(possibly a regular rider for the owners). Has not been fully tested in
his three races and has always time time to get into top gear but has looked
reasonably impressive once he finds it against average types. Leaves the
impression that he'll be keeping on and improving his position at the end
of this type of race but will lack the all round pace to cope with the
better types. Profile [90]
