2002 - 2004 Statistics
R. F. Fisher (Ulverston, Cumbria)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Successful National Hunt trainer in 1980s and 1990s. Has run five to seven 2yos in each season 2002-4 after starting with two 2yos in 2001. They have all been bought at sales for between 2k to 20k gns. All 2yos in 2004 owned but 'Great Head Estates Ltd', i.e. his registered stable.
  • Overall opinion of the 2001-4 performance is that he lacks a sure touch with the 2yos. Consider that:-
    • Debuts are usually poor, often rating below 40 and the runners can look very inexperienced, especially with early season debuts.
    • He does not appear to assess and rank his 2yos before they run.
    • With one exception all of the wins have been in sellers or poor northern races and most rated below 60.
    • Wins are usually 5TO or later after runners that have run moderately earlier in their career finally get to their best rating and/or are dropped in class. 3 of the winners have been in sellers or by runners after they have run in sellers.
  • The one exception has been Beckermet in 2004 who rated over 90 and won four races. However he had so much natural ability that any trainer would have won races with him. Beckermet's 2yo career is useful in highlighting two interesting points. He was a classic example of a 2yo that shows up well on debut (at 33/1 as second string with a 5lb apprentice on) from a non-FTO trainer being a sure sign of a useful runner. Beckermet looked inexperienced and ran freely on debut but his natural cruising speed had him close up throughout and challenging for the win before slightly fading in the last furlong. He rated around 60 on debut compared to the normal 40ish level. The second point is that If Beckermet had been with another trainer (J. Given for example) he would have been ready on debut and would have won FTO and his season would have developed differently.
  • In summary, debuts usually poor and often inexperienced, probably rating below 45. FTO SPs will be 16/1 or more. A debut runner which runs well on debut is probably capable of rating 80+ at least. Runners usually need three runs or more to develop to their best rating.
