Pre-race Summary
June 19th SUMMING UP
  • The second string 5f race for colts & geldings at the meeting behind the Norfolk Stakes. The bulk of the field is usually of handicap and conditions race winner quality and, as normal, any better types will win and fill the places. In the last two seasons the placed horses have provided two winners of the later 5f Group3 Molecomb Stakes (Tournedos & Strike Up The Band), one winner of the 5f Group 2 Flying Childers (Chateau Istana) along with Listed race winner Tabaret. The message is that other than the later Norfolk and Queen Mary fields this race probably includes a fair proportion of the best of the later season specialist 5f runners.
  • In a big field there is enough potential to thin that the best of these could figure in those later Group races. There is the same conundrum for 'British 2yo Racing' as with the Coventry in that there are two Irish contenders to add to the more well known juveniles. Rabatash represents David Wachman who has a 100% with his 2yos at Royal Ascot thanks to Damson's Queen Mary win in 2004. He is the most expensive in the field and is by first season sire Johannesburg whom Mr Wachman's father-in-law (i.e John Magnier and the driving force behind the Coolmore Stud behemoth) will be keen to see have agood start. The fact that he is in this race and not the Norfolk perhaps tells us that he is not high class but he will presumably be a strong contender here and might be a class above. Snaefell looks a typically solid type for this race and ought to make the first 6.
  • The best of the home runners on profile is Scented Present who had his limitations exposed against a superior 5f type in Hoh Mike but is a very good 'fit' for this race and ought to place at least. The best alternatives are likely to be We'll Confer for the astute Kevin Ryan and the Hannon pair of Dazed And Amazed & The Old Fella. The former Hannon runner showed a neat change of pace to win at Newmarket from limited 2yos and appears to be the first string with R. Hughes riding. The Old Fella is a very different physical type, bigger and stonger and with the scope to develop further through the season and at 3yo whatever he shows here. He made his debut over 6f at the course in a conditions race with Ryan Moore riding and K. Fallon takes over here as he drops to 5f. In this type of strong pace race he makes more appeal than Dazed And Amazed who seems likely to be at his best using his turn of foot against lesser opposition.
