Pre-race Summary
The 2002-2005 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
JUNE 23rd SUMMING UP
  • An interesting renewal of the race and probably of average quality without the lurking Group 1 juvenile like Milk It Mick & Wilko in 2003-4. The Irish runner Country Song has already won twice including over 7f in defeating Hammers Boy who was unplaced in the Coventry. The Irish 2yos have not competed well so far and it seems likely that that a better home based runner would be superior.
  • Only Tension Point of the others has even run over 7f given that the 7f races only started last week in this country. He ran third in a traditionally solid maiden at Sandown but that race was run at a moderate pace and turned into a sprint. In paddock review he looked a readier type than the real 7f+ contenders, strong quartered relatively compact. His 'laddo' attitude seemed likely to be a problem if it developed. He is the type that can find a maiden he can win over 7f but there ought to be better in the field.
  • The two who make strong appeal are Cumin & Champlain who have both run good debuts in useful maidens over 6f without winning. Cumin was one of a batch of better debuts the trainer ran between the 9th and 17th of June and a little behind his normal schedule. This June batch usually is made up of better 2yos and his recent winner of this race (Whazzat) won her debut in the first week in June before coming to the Chesham. Cumin ran into a tougher opponent Alzerra than Whazzat had to contend with and could not win but showed enough to suggest she will improve for the run and the step to 7f.
  • Champlain ran in the tough Newbury maiden that produced the 2nd & 5th in the Coventry and ran a fine race in third. He ran relatively keenly and led inside 2f out but kept on quite well given the effort he had put in. His trainer tends to have his 2yos mostly fit and ready on debut and he probably has a little less scope to develop than Cumin and gives her 5lb because of the fillies allowance which tips the balance in her favour.
  • Mark Johnston likes training stayers and at the sales regularly buys bigger types by stout sires that many others do not even consider. This policy certainly works because there are plenty of 7-8f 2yo races and staying races at 3yo which are relatively uncompetitive given the overall bias to shorter distances. He is a regular supporter of this race and returns with two runners after a blank in 2005. He bred Always Fruitful who is by Fruits Of Love whom he trained so he was keen to get him out and winning as soon as possible. He has competed well over 6f and has looked likely to be suited to this 7f. Overall, he looks short of the normal class of the winner of the race. Middleham dropped back to 5f on a stiff course to win a moderate maiden and steps back to 7f in one go. He appears to be the second string .
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • Race used to be limited to sires who won over 12f and an attempt to make it attractive to continue to breed stouter types in a market tilted towards speed and precocity. A number of the sires represented here only won up to 10f so the conditions of the race may have been amended.
  • A variable race quality and a performance anywhere between 85-100 can be required to win. The race is one of the earliest 7f races of the year and most of the field will be running over the distance for the first time.
  • SIRES:
  • In line with the conditions of entry for the race the sires represented are not noted for 2yos runners other than in later season. The first season sires represented are Best Of The Bests (Middleham) & Golan (Kindlelight Blue).
