    Trainer :
  • Trainer Brian Smart has relatively rare debut runners at York with 6 sinece 2002 of which 4 have been winners as 2yos. Two have been for his prime owner Reg Bond (Bond & Marshal Tyres businessman) who sponsors the stable. In 2002 Monsieur Bond finished second at 20/1 in a maiden which looked much stronger than expected by season end with Somnus winning. That runner was a 100+ rated 2yo and an older Group 2 winner. In 2005 Misu Bond was fourth on debut at 4/1 and went on to be a Listed winner in the Redcar Trophy.
  • With that background Captain Gerrard, an expensive son of Oasis Dream, should be assessed for the future and may compete quite well although tit looks a tough edition of the race. He was reviewed at the sales and scored well as a compact and powerful sprinter.
  • In the same York race Tom Tate runs The Last Bottle who is a relatively expensive purchase for an important owner for the yard. In this section a number of trainers have been highlighted so far who are notable for getting longer priced debut winners but it has been a so-so season for many of these so far. We have seen wins for Mick Easterby & James Given but less predictable ones for trainers like Ian Semple (50/1), Jim Goldie (33/1) & John Wainwright (50/1).
  • Mr Tate is different from some in that he does have more expensive horses and seems to tune his horses quite well for debut. In the last 2 years he has run 14 juveniles and four have won on debut, 2 in each season. The SPs have been 33/1, two at 20/1 and 8/1 with three others making the first 4 at between 11/2 to 33/1. His wins have come in the period June to September and he does not necessarily run his best 2yos in the very early ones. However with his record he makes a case for following him each-way with all his debuts.
  • Paddock Review :
  • Montaquila was reviewed at the sales and received the highest rating of any 2yo to have made his debut so far. A good size and build but also a neat and ready type who carried himself well. His trainer Howard Johnson had not had his usual strong debut run until yesterday when his Art Advisor finished second in the 5f Novice race at the course. With the support of his sales report he should be another strong debut candidate.
  • Ratings :
  • Party In The Park has finished placed in what appeared to be two of the strongest maidens run so far but has been comfortably beaten by two of the best 2yos seen to date. At Newmarket he tried to go with Achilles Of Troy and the pace & pressure that runner applied as he wound things up was too much for him and he had to reorganise himself to keep second place when the pace told.
  • His trainer traditionally runs a very good 5-6f 2yo in the Salisbury maiden although he has only won it once in the last 10 years. Of his six entries he runs three and Party In The Park is first string on jockeys. If his rating of 69 is correct then it will take a very impressive debut from another high class 2yo to better him and he will have been unlucky three times. If he is beaten with no obvious excuse then the form he has shown in those defeats will need to be questioned.
  • Other :
  • First season sire Hawk Wing has made no impact with a small number of runners over 5f to date and never seem likely to excel in that area. His credential to produce competitive 2yos gets a more worthwhile test in the 6f maiden at York where he has three reasonably expensive 2yos to represent him from solid or better trainers of juveniles. They are - Feared In Flight, Montaquila & The Last Bottle.

  •   May 17th Summary :

    • Two very good maidens on the day with a shortlist of possible winners for each and plenty of future potential amongst the field. The Salisbury maiden has a very good record of producing important 2yos each season and 2006 was no exception with Strategic Prince(Group 2 winner) successful with a pair of Listed winners (Dazed And Amazed & Vital Statistics) in behind. This year produces a big field (the multiple entries from some trainers suggests they were hoping the race would be divided) and five horses with good profile and potential. Party In The Park is dealt with above and after his debut he looked like the type of horse the trainer would run in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury (won by Dszed And Amazed for him last year) so it is no surprise to see him in this race.
    • The quality of his form depends on how good you think Winker Watson and Achilles Of Troy are because he has been comfortably dealt with by one and ironed out by the other. B2yoR has no doubt at present (on TV viewing) that Achilles Of Troy is the 'real thing' and getting sorted out by him not that bad a sign. If you watch the video of the race when they are in the stalls and viewed from behinf Achilles Of Troy's behind is much higher than anything else and his jockey looking down and the others. Now, Party In The Park is a good sized horse but made to look small and it was clear just from that one TV shot that if the O'Brien horse could move his weight effectively he would do what he did. As it turned out he was a much more efficient mover than Party In The Park and at that point size does matter.Winker Watson looked a less classy type and more of a well-grown 2yo who can beat up on the less well developed ones but will get found out by the reeal class at some point in the season.
    • Either wasy, he sets a good standard which only Hadaf seems likely to be able to compete with. He is the first runner for Marcus Tregoning of the year and he has had a debut winner in May in each of the last 4 seasons from a handful of runners. The May debuts have been a mix of good ones (from Sir Percy down) but with the bulk (7 of 11) non-winners in the season and got out early to see if they can blag a nothing race. He runs two here, both for Hamdan Al Maktoum (an owner we take seriously for debut wins if you recall) with Hadaf the first string and Tayarat perhaps more of the 'non-winner' make.
    • Mr Tregoning used to be on the B2yoR 'Show Or Nothing' list for trainers meaning if a 2yo of his didn't show up well FTO he could safely be ignored as duff. The moderate group of 2yos he has had in 2004 and 2006 (just 10 winners from 54 runners) has at times made that less obvious but 50% of those 10 winners still were successful FTO. Which all points to Hadaf being the best opponent on the day.
    • In the 'potential' category are a good set of profiles for King's General, Liberty Valance and What Katie Did. With Amanda Perrett having her older string so well forward this year and with a place for her first 2yo then King's General (with a leg owned by her father) ought to make 3rd or 4th at least. Liberty Valance at the forecast 25/1 looks a value price each-way and anothe rpretty certain winner in the season in a race we should always search for better types in.
    • The York race looks a pretty good version of the event with plenty of future promise int he field and some interesting debut material. Mission Impossible sets the standard for those that have run and was punted down from 40/1 FTO but got outpaced over a stiff 5f before plugging on again. A debut of that quality for Pat Haslam used to indicate a very high class horse but in recent seasons that link has become less clear. He's probably average and a better debut would seem a more likely option for the winner. B2yoR hasn't given up on Howard Johnson so all the best Montaquila and don't be embarassing and a bit on Tom Tate's runner because you have to.
    • Of the others Nawaaff is for owner Ahmed Al Maktoum and Mick Channon has won with both of his debuts for him so far this year. The trainer has a solid debut record at the track with 1 win and 3 places from 7 runners in the last 5 years. A good 2yo pedigree as well means that you wouldn't put anyone off supporting him so long as the value hasn't been squeezed out by those other debut wins (something around 9/2 would be value). Mark Johnston's record with 6f debuts at the meeting is offputting for Hawaass and also his overall record with 2yos on going easier than good (a subjest we'll return to). He had a good 6f debut by Abolition in the first 6f race at Newcastle so we should assess this debut to see whether he's got a better start going this year.
    • A minor bit of interest in the race is to see what Zaplamation achieves. On debut at Pontefract in an ok sort of race he travelled well enough behind a four-way pace duel and came into the straight well set to make some sort of effort. And what happened? Absolutlely nothing and the jockey seemed to immediately give up and let him drift back and then eased up. The '9th' in the form book looks bad but he needs to be given another chance to show that early promise wasn't empty. The fact that he's at this course for the trainer seems to be some positive given that he's run all the horses you've heard of from him here as 2yos (Sierra Vista, Whinhill House, Summer Special, Dorn Dancer & Choysia).
