    Trainer :
  • Trainer Eoghan O'Neill has been featured here several times and other than a pair of strong debuts in late May (one runs STO in the fillies' Listed race) he hasn't shown us a better type since. His better runners usually win or place FTO and they often come in batches together if he has them. He had three debuts lined up for yesterday and today with Ceka Dancer a non-runner at Newmarket of Friday. Today he has Spinning Sound running at Newmarket and the expensive Green Oasis in an easier race at Wolverhampton.
  • The Newmarket maiden has a typical STO runner from the Hannon yard (Ghetto) in a race he won with a similar profile in 2005-6. It appeals as an event where a strong debutant has agood chance of winning and David Simcock has reached the period when he may produce a useful type and Noble Citizen has a good profile to be above average. In the same event John Dunlop runs newcomer Al Azy for Hamdan Al Maktoum and another likelt to compete well for a place.
  • Paddock Review :
  • Mark Johnston's Battlecruiser made a, not unusual, moderate first run in early May and was to inexperieinced to go the pace against good, precocious types. However, he looked a better type of physical set-up and steps up to a more suitable 6f on a stiff track at Newcastle. His trainer's 2yos were not running well then but with recent winners he looks to be just entering a strong period for his 2yos. He has won the race at Newcastle with a newcomer for the last two seasons and late June and into July often sees a number of strong debuts from the stable with the number of wins an indicator of how useful the group is.
  • These lost debut's in May are quite common and often occut at York's May meeting and the 2yos involved often come back to win in late June owards. For example, he has had Desert Realm & Dubai's Touch follow this path in recent years.
  • Ratings :
  • The fillies' Listed race at Newmarket comes quite soon after Royal Ascot and the recent winners have not run at that meeting. The race tends to be a low quality affair in Listed terms and the last 7 winners have managed odd places in average Group events susbsequently. This year's race looks similar with a close packed Class Ladder. Three of the five Ascot fillies carry penalties for previous wins and these weight concessions tend to prove too much to overcome.
  • The best of the filies with solid form - Loch Jipp, Cake & Liberty Belle set a standard in the low 70s before penalties and in 2006 the estimates for Listed winners ranged from 64-92 to give an indication. In summary a trciky race and one where a filly who didn't run at Ascot might be the best solution and Highland Daughter has the best profile with Dresden Daughter & Yasinsi as longer priced alternatives.
  • The 6f Albany Stakes at Ascot which Loch Jipp & Liberty Belle ran in makes peculiar viewing on video review. Four of the first 5 home, plus Waveline (made a strong move later int he race before a late fade) whose jockey lost his irons at the start and was behind as he recovered them were in a group at the back off the far side and well off the pace. Jamie Spencer took winner Nijoom Dubai purposely behind the field to the far side to get the better ground.
  • Assuming that the far strip of ground and missing the pace was a solid advantage it will be interesting to see how the best of the centre to stands' side runners fare next time. Janina did best in 5th and there is a strong case to say she would have been 2nd or 3rd with a different path in the race. Loch Jipp was behind her in 9th with a similar path but looks to have too big a task with a 5lb penalty today. Miss Emma May who finished in front of Loch Jipp with the same route looks likely to be much better than she has shown so far.
  • Liberty Belle ran on the favourable far side but made the pace in that group and faded before the final furlong. On paddock review she was just above average and ought to be capable of 70+ ratings which she hasn't had the chance to show so far.

      June 30th Summary :

    • A limited preview today with Folkestone being a long way from anywhere when the motorways are mostly stationary. The Cheveley Park filly Carnival Queen was a disappointment being just an average type (and despite the trainer's normal preparation) too immature to compete well. No surprise to see her at longer odds and not placing and a lower level win STO seems the likely height of her capabilities. Of the two 'eyecatchers' noted Redesdale looked below average and if he was the standard of horse closing in that Newmarket (Class 3) maiden then we shouldn't expect too much future relevance from it. Solent Ridge was still too immature to show his best but below average overall although a reasonable size. One to see how he develope in lower grade but not a strong follow. The race also featured one of the least likely athletes seen so far with Birdsville and it should be worrying for any of the runners who finished beihnd the 5 lenght 'garbage gap to 6th that she was in amongst them.
