      September 14th Summary : 
     
    • One big point to track at Great Leighs is how the advantage of being (very) close to the pace on the inside rail affects the races. Yesterday showed being on the pace and close to the rail in the straight as a big advantage and the runners just did not stop despite some early duels to maintain the prime positions. In the fillies' nursery stall 1 & 2 are taken by fillies who are out of the handicap and haven't shown much. Hosanna looks a little better type than she has shown but needs a huge improvement. Madison Belle is now with Karl Burke with Heidi Sweeting retiring and a move away from her stable worked for Agnes Love but her for looks too limited for a great leap forward. The reliable Fazbee is in 4 and you would expect her to be able to get beyond that pair and get to the rail provided she can deal with Spring Tale. That is perhaps the key to the race because Spring Tale is big enough to compete with Fazbee and ran well when 10th inthe Supersprint and probably didnlt like the faster ground when she ran poorly. Given the shape of races at the track recently with making ground wide in the straight very difficult the top two on the profile ought to be able to control the race.
    • With less experienced horses in the maiden the balance between the basic ability and stalls position is more difficult to call. If the best horse, with experience, is well drawn and can race prominently they could win well. A good quality newcomer might be able to close down a more limited front-runner because of the difference in class. Dannios is out in stall 11 so will have to work to get close to the lead and Piccolinda achieved a moderate rating for her debut 4th although placed ok in stall 4. Her trainer's horses don't consistently step forward STO to add a nother doubt. John Gosden does get debut winners which are typically better class horses who win on ability and not on pre-race tuning. They often lose ground in the early stages. So, an interesting set-up in the race with no runner having a fully positive profile of ability matched with track position. Time to see what the paddock review makes of Wartime (is he the better type?) and try to get a handle on what John Best is doing with Noverre To Hide.
