Findlay part owned Mrs Smilla had received support in the morning but drifted from 6/5f on-course. Trainer Ryan usually picks out a set of compact little sprinters to run early and they peak STO. His first two debuts had both placed 2nd. Miss Smilla a negative in paddock review and behind Monalini in size, fitness, mental maturity and coat condition. In the race Monalini set a usable pace and saw off Always Dixie who pressed him to the final furlong. Miss Smilla driven along before either of th leaders and looked inexperienced when asked for an effort and hung to centre track. Miccolo & Cariad Coch both faded badly off the pace leaving Mr Smithson to plug on through the faders to chase Monalini who responded. He is probably a usable OR66+ type. Monalini's trainer often gets debut winners in May but early ones are rare and usually indicate a useful horse or a weak race. The way the winner responded in the final furlong would suggest a positive view of him in a Novice event. |
