Maiden used to have a strong record for producing high class fillies with Group winners successful in both 2002 & 2004 (Never A Doubt & Jewel In The Sand) and other Group quality fillies involved. Jeremy Noseda introduced Group winner La Chunga in the race in 2005 and she finished 4th before a win at Royal Ascot (York). The last 4 runnings 2006-9 have produced little with last year's winner perhaps the best and later Listed placed. This version look much stronger and have more in common with those strong 2000-2005 editions on Profile. GMD & TTIG both seemed to run well and get run away from by Rimth at Windsor. If those two had gone close to winning here it would make Rimth look very good. Instead their performances cast doubt over what quality Rimth was actually beating. But Rimth did it very comfortably. GMD perhaps go a bit too strongly but unable to last out better than Eucharist who took her on and comes from another Windsor maiden which has produced a range of strong later efforts (unlike the Rimth race on the efforts here). Robin Bastiman interviewed in morning and asked why Neil Callan was not riding Singeur in a good race at Southwell. He said that the jockey had to be at Sandown to ride a filly for Clive Brittain who was supposed to be pretty good. Which presumably meant Elshabakiya who ran 3rd just behind the leaders and managed to get by them later on but softened up for a closer. Mr Noseda back running an expensive US prepared filly in this race as he has before with Take Flight and ran well to be 3rd. Trainer typically starts in May and gets strong debuts and wins from the best he has including those going to Royal Ascot. Which means the placed horses putting the 'Windsor Fillies' in their place makes a nice shape to the result. This gets topped by Maqaasid. John Gosden does not do strong debuts and those that win FTO are normally Listed+ class. This his 4th debut and the others have included two grisly last places and an anonymous one by an ok filly. Maqaasid not wound up here and lost ground at the start and last early on. Made ground easily after halfway to get from last to 2nd rank before 1F out and at least as comfortably as Rimth had done. Had to switch to centre track and strong finish to be going away at the end and well clear of GMD & TTIG. A high class prospect on this and ought to be Group winning class (unless anything halfway decent can look like Arazi weaving around GMD & TTIG..) Tom Dascombe still not really going with his 2yos and had suggested in early season that Countess Ellen was one of his best sprint fillies (won this last year with Above Limits). Never competitive here but perhaps another better one not able to show her best for some reason so check development. TTIG lose ground at the start and bumped. Never travelling comfortably afterwards and moderate response as the efforts made. GMD run a little more freely than Eucharist early in the race with GMD wanting to lead (neck ahead at halfway) with Eucharist settled. Both fading late and make closers look better in comparison. |
