SUMMARY
Strong pace with field spread over wide margins by halfway. Trading leading with TS alongside at 0.5L back. Miserere & SB in behind these pair around 2L off lead and settled. MK at 5L and outpaced soon after halfway. MP at 6L and driven along before halfway. Miss Clairton around 11L back and green. SBP & BC adrift from early & 20-25L back and jockeys inactive.
Snow Bear supported and another stronger debut for John Quinn as a good 2yo trainer but FTOs seem more competitive rescently. This FTO win supported as the one in 2009 was. But, this a weak race on profile and previous runners present moderate opposition for a ready OR70+.
Former trainer David Barker interviewed before racing and difficult to assess what he meant with non-direct nudge-and-wink answers to straight questions. TS out of a mare that ran 150 times for him, winning 16, and playing a big part in getting his training career going. Asked whether trainer Midgley had told him anything about TS he said he had seen it working last week so the trainer had not needed to say anything. When pressed for whether he had seen something good or bad more indeterminate phrases followed. Horse received some each-way support and attended a strong pace here suggesting he had seen it had some pace and knew this was a weak race. Barker said in response to this looking a weak race that this was 'Catterick on firm ground' so you would not expect better horses.
Barker also hinted at a reason for the poor showings overall by the Midgley 2yos so far. Said that yard had found a 'Copper Deficiency' problem with the nutrition and he had put Midgley in touh with the expert he used.
Miss Clairton the first runner for Mark Prescott. Used to have a consistent reccord with 2yos until 2005 with around 10-14 winners (that is winners (i.e. horses) not wins (i.e races)) from 30-35 individual runners. Bad years in 2006 & 2009 with 2007-8 better. Early debuts usually 2yo types rather than the '3yo Handicap set-ups' although variable record. First runner in 2009 one of his 2 winners and first 7 to run in 2008 all managed to win. Got away ok here but then lost 7-8L after 1.5F perhaps just through being green rather than outpaced. Closing into the stallers in the final furlong and unbalanced 0.5F out or would have been nearer at finish. Ought to be the competitive type on this.
BC look very unco-operative. Bucking and flashing tail To Post (TP). More tail flashing and refusing to go forward in the race.
MP notably free TP.
Miserere show pace on debut and drop from 2nd to 4th late on having taken on a horse who would have been capable of winning this. Seemed to have a good draw here but slowly way and then cut-off by Trading forcing over. Ran too freely then in behind. A surprise given the early part of race that she was still making ground at the line after a less than clear run on the rail in the last 1.5F. Better than the result shows.
