Field raced down Stands' rail here while the first Divsion ran centre track with the winner getting over to the stands' rail in the last 1.5F. 10L Winner of this race 0.95 Seconds faster than 5L winner of Division 1. Which makes placed horses in both races similar performance level. Perhaps helps to explain support for SC here. Presume Hannons knew SC much better than KT for day. Hughes rode Hannon winner of Division 1 but presume went to Windsor before the much later Div 2 so Ryan Moore kept the ride on SC (rode him at Newmarket for FTO). Field taken along at a stiff pace by SC along with over-racing Diplomasi (fizzy & immature in prelims and similar in race). Halfway positions versus final placings seem to tell and odd story. SC leading at halfway but at a pace that broke everything else other than 50/1 RASpa. Field closely group for most of first half of race with first 8 within 4.5L of lead at halfway with EP (wild in prelims and too unfocussed to perform) and GB (another moderate run by a McCabe 2yo) already starting to creak under the pressure. RASpa not affected by pace in same way because 4-5L adrift off the back. He got into the faders by plugging on while never being in the race showing a willing attitude (An ok build but looking relatively unfit and not ready in Review). Last 4 home fully fading or eased before the last 1f. Stentorian already stalling and faded inside the last 1F. Which left OME & ROpera to chase SC for as long as they could before fading later on. In effect SC had set a time trial had set a pace that had progressively broken everything else (including two with previous runs who both underperformed under the pressure) and left him 10L clear and still going forward at finish. (Picture) But, worth noting that the strong finish was from the horse racing closest to the stands' rail in the last 1f. Look at the two 7f races on the straight course on the day and the same shape shows up. Seta may have been the best horse in her race but never looked like stopping on the rail from First City (excellent condition, best turned out & supported). In the handicap Learo Dochais steamed down the stands rail and never stopped to win with the second close to him on the rail. |
