Meeting started on GGF but changed to GS during meeting. Overcast day after warm spell. No rain between the morning GGF and later GS. Cleark of Course said they had watered the ground heavily (terrific). Weak race on Profile depending on strength of Satin Love as Johnston newcomer and two, cheaper, Breeze-up buys with Insolenceofoffice & Brave Dream. Dierdre Johnston said before race that they had felt their 2yos were quite forward in March to April but then colder weather seemed to set them back. Had taken a break and now startig to run a batch. Record after this race with three runners in this batch is a non-runner, a moderate run by the expensive Stentorian (Surplus Stock?) and Satin Love withdrawn here. Reared in stalls and got right foreleg over the partition. Interesting to note that Mrs Johnston strongly suggested that until they have had a few runners and seen how they compete they do not have a strong view on the abilities they have. She said they needed a few runenrs to settle an initial 'Pecking Order' at home. InsolenceOO not supported as a Findlay owned one and apparently today was not the day even it is has some ability. Brave Dream favourite but a good demonstration of why supporting a Kevin Ryan newcomer (nearly any FTO) with Spencer on is a suspect use of money. Horse green and Spencer the one to run around shouting 'Dont Panic' rather than quietly trying to manage the situation. Which left the race up for grabs. Michael Dods a very profitable trainer to follow with debut runners over the years and has had 2 x 100/1 FTO winners since 2002. Early runners this year not compete well and suggest the 2yo string behind. At the same time his older horses were running competitively so the average Pundit was putting people away by telling them the stable was 'In Form' (another meaningless phrase that ought to be banned) as if the 2yos were not independent in some form. His last debut runner was a 2nd and he has a batch of horses entered over the next few days including more expensive ones for main owner Andrew Tinkler. Mr Dods interviewed before race and said he did not think Sergeant Suzie was much good but that the Kirkups were lucky owners and seemed to always get winners. The race proved a good demonstration of why Mr Dods gets FTO successes. The race had cut up to need a weak performance to win it and running the rail an advantage. SSuzie may not be very good but now the Dods' 2yos appear to be ready she was fit enough and competent. Led throughout on the rail and only challenged by a similar debut filly in her mould. You would expect some of his better 2yos debuts coming up to compete well but interesting to see how that Market reacts to those. Sea Flower another supported Tim Easterby debut and his string has seemed more forawrd and competitive on debut this year. [Update = Dods interviewed the day after this win said he had never been so surprised in his racing career as by this win. He had said to the owners afterwards he would sell them his Alsatian and with their luck it would win something. SSuzie one of four 2yos taken to Ripon for a gallop and had finished 12L+ behind the others and sturggling. One of others Dubawi Gold who won on debut the day after this race as favourite at Ayr and looking useful. On the plus side Dods said that SSuzie was a trier despite her limitations.] |
